He learned the "surgical handicraft" in the university specialization of general surgery, accident and transplant surgery. Transplant surgery, in particular, is an ideal prerequisite for plastic surgery: a particularly gentle, precise and refined treatment technique is vital to survival. He completed his training as a plastic surgeon in the Department of Plastic Surgery at the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Krankenanstalten Bergmannsheil in Bochum under the direction of Prof. Dr. Fritz-Eduard Müller. During several months of study visits in England, Scotland, USA and France, he became acquainted with internationally recognized special methods of aesthetic surgery which he then used in his own practice and clinic. In 1976 Dr. Sandner took over the Clinic for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Karlsruhe. In 1991 the clinic was rebuilt and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
