Dr Stephen Hughes

Steve graduated from Chiropractic college in England in 1990 from a science background with a previous Honours degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from Manchester University. His great passion has always been the care and treatment of children and post-graduate studies in Paediatrics and cranial work led to the establishment in 1992 of a Chiropractic clinic in West London specialising in the treatment of babies, children and pregnant women. He began teaching in 1995 on the Chiropractic care of new-borns and pregnant women and has more recently been involved in the Paediatric Masters course at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic. His teaching and research studies have taken him to Europe and America and has published several articles. He was Academic Dean of the College of Chiropractors and is currently an external examiner at Portsmouth University. Despite his academic and teaching obligations, Steve's real love is still clinical practice and he maintains a very active presence at the Octagon Clinic. He is registered with the General Chiropractic Council and a member of the British Chiropractic Council.

Dr Claire Gordon

Claire qualified in 1996 from the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic with a Batchelor of Science Degree in Chiropractic and following her registration year was awarded a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in 1997. Starting her professional Chiropractic life in Cornwall, Claire worked in Bodmin for a year, developing her skills by treating a wide range of people and building a busy practice. She moved to Sutton, Surrey in 1997 and developed a keen interest in antenatal, postnatal and Paediatric care. In 2000 Claire moved to Bristol in order to start her own Clinic within a Multidisciplinary Practice. For the past six years she has worked with a team that included: an Acupuncturist, Alexander Technique Teacher, Applied Kinesiologist, Functional Dentist, Homeopath, Nutritionist, Pilates and Spinal Rehabilitation Specialists. This network of Practitioners has provided each patient with the greatest scope for improvement in their health and quality of life. A move to London in December 2006, lead to Claire joining The Octagon Chiropractic Clinic. She was inspired by the opportunity to be part of a motivated and dedicated team that provides an integrated and progressive approach to Chiropractic care. A firm believer that post-graduate study is vital to maintain excellent skills in diagnosis and treatment, Claire has completed many hours of post-graduate education. She studied Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) for 4 years and is qualified to Advanced level. SOT is a comprehensive and progressive concept of Chiropractic that forms the basis of treatment Claire offers for pregnant and post-partum patients, infants and children. The idea behind SOT is that the skull, spine and pelvis function as a single unit. Dysfunction in one part of the unit will affect other parts. SOT addresses not only mechanical dysfunction itself, but also its effects on nerve and organ function. This form of Chiropractic treatment can influence a wide range of lung, stomach, liver, kidney and glandular conditions. In order to develop a greater understanding of the cranial system, Claire went on to study Cranio Sacral Technique (CST). This therapy recognises the link between the body’s membrane network and structures to which the membranes attach. Treatment is via a gentle hands-on technique that can be used to address: joint and muscle complaints, jaw dysfunction, headaches, migraine, circulatory, sinus, lung, stomach, bowel and glandular disorders. Again, it is a treatment approach ideally suited to antenatal, postnatal and Paediatric care. In 2003, Claire began a 3-year course in Chiropractic Neurology. The course provided a thorough training in how the central nervous system works and all the branches of the nervous system arising from it. The information taught on the course was based on the most up-to-date findings from research within the fields of Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology (i.e. research into human structure, our neurological wiring and how the naturally occurring chemicals that circulate within our bodies can be affected by neurological and structural changes).
