About Helplink Mental Health - Mayo

Helplink Mental Health is a charitable organisation that provides accessible counselling services 7 days a week and out-of-hours for children, young people and adults

Our counselling/therapy services include: 

  • general counselling

General counselling, couples counselling, bereavement counselling, play therapy, art therapy and addiction appointments are provided face-to-face in Castlebar, Mayo and also Galway City.

We also provide the following counselling services securely online nationwide:

Appointment Fees 

Discounted Fees: for general, addiction and bereavement counselling appointments the fee is €30; if you are:

  • a full-time (third level) student
  • a part-time counselling student
  • a part-time worker (working less then 20 hours a week),
  • a single parent
  • in receipt of a social protection payments (e.g. Jobseeker’s Benefit/Allowance, Disability Benefit etc.)

Note 1: you must provide evidence of your status to avail of this fee. Other specialised counselling/therapeutic services fees may vary.

Note 2: For young people (under the age of 18), the appointment fee is determined by which category their parents/caregivers fall into.

Employed Persons Fee: as a non-profit organisation we try to keep the fees for appointments as low as possible. For employed people the cost for a general counselling appointment is €70

Please ask about the fees for the other types of counselling appointments we offer (e.g. Play Therapy, Art Therapy & Couples Counselling); as these fees vary.

Helplink counsellors are available at times to suit the client - we are open 7 days a week:
  • Monday to Friday from 9 am to 9 pm 
  • Saturday/Sunday 12 to 6 pm 
  • Closed Christmas/New Year's eve and Bank holidays

All of our counsellors are knowledgeable in many different types of therapeutic techniques. However, in the main we use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or other Solution Focused Therapies, as these techniques have been shown, through extensive international research, to work particularly well with both face-to-face and online/phone counselling.  

We are not a crisis counselling service if you are in need of urgent mental health care please go to your local GP or A & E.

Art Therapy - Helplink Mental Health - Mayo

Art Therapy from our fully qualified and accredited art therapist is available by appointment in Galway & Mayo for 50 Euro per appointment.

Art therapy is the use of art materials for self expression and reflection in the presence of a qualified art therapist. Art therapy is a unique process, combining creativity and psychotherapy for growth, awareness and healing. It is done in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

Bereavement Counselling

Bereavement counselling in Helplink is provided by qualified, supervised, Garda vetted, Counsellors/Therapists. We also have a specialist counsellor with additional training in complicated grief therapy (Teresa Burns - see staff profiles).

Online counselling available nationwide, face-to-face counselling available in Galway City.

Youth Counselling

Play Therapy in  Galway with Helplink is for children aged 3 to 10 years old. For young children aged 11-15, we offer our Creative Therapy service and a Youth Counselling service.

Play Therapy for Children

Play Therapy with Helplink is for children aged 3 to 10 years old and our Creative Therapy  service is for young people aged 11 to 15. These forms of therapy allow children and young people the time and space to work out what may be troubling them and also to express their feelings through their most natural method of communication – PLAY!

In our Galway Play Therapy and Creative Therapy service appointments are 45 minutes long, they are non-directive and non-investigative in nature, whereby the child/young person leads the sessions and the therapist follows. The room holds the play/creative therapy ‘tool kit’ which includes sand, clay, puppets, role play, art materials, therapeutic stories, creative visualisations and music/movement.

Pauline is an MA student in Counselling and Psychotherapy (Integrative) with the Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences. Pauline holds a B.Ed (Exeter University), a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work, (Leeds Polytechnic); a Diploma in Systemic Management, (Roehampton Institute), and an MSc in Systemic Management (University of Sunderland). Pauline has experience in working with domestic abuse, child protection, adoption, fostering, and adult safeguarding. She has also worked as a management and social work consultant, independent supervisor, trainer, and social work service manager. Pauline is experienced in exploring neuro-diversity from the client’s perspective and has also assisted parents who are navigating educational challenges with their children. Pauline uses a person-centred approach combined with an affective relational understanding in her counselling practice. She utilises CBT and systemic tools as appropriate for the individual. She is an accredited member of the Addiction Counsellors of Ireland (ACI) and has worked over 8 years as a Deputy manager in an emergency respite centre for young people in care. Biography:

Cormac Lyons, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, is a graduate of the Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences where he achieved a master’s degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. He began practicing psychotherapy in 2021 and throughout his time practising, he has worked with clients aged between 18-60. He has helped clients cope with various mental health issues like depression and anxiety as well as other issues such as anger and stress management. Cormac’s dissertation was focused on the attitudes that men living in Ireland have towards seeking professional mental health help and has completed various workshops on topics such as EDMR, complex grief, and trauma.

Hamza Mahoney

Hamza Mahoney is pursuing a Master of Science in Loss & Bereavement (Clinical Practice) at RCSI and the Irish Hospice Foundation. He has first-class honours and a Bachelor of Arts in Counselling with Addiction from Munster Technological University. Professionally, he holds Pre-Accredited Membership with IACP and Accredited Membership with ACI. Ronan qualified as a counsellor from the Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences (ICHAS) in Limerick in 2022.  He also recently completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Gambling studies and Addiction Recovery at ICHAS.
