Initial consultation An initial consultation for osteopathy takes approximately 1 hour. John starts by taking a detailed case history asking about presenting symptoms and also current state of health and past medical history. An examination is then carried out with a mixture of observation and palpation. The patient may be asked to perform certain movements or the osteopath may carry out passive movement of the patient. Certain diagnostic tests may be carried out. From the case history and the examination, John will come to a working diagnosis and decide on a treatment / management approach. This may include further sessions of hands-on therapy, exercises / stretches etc, or further referral if required. Follow up consultations Several further sessions may be required depending on progress. These follow up consultations typically last 30 minutes. Further examinations are carried out and treatment given.
