Ms Barbara Halford

Biography:
Barbara’s yoga sessions are informed by her 11 years of personal yoga practice, her training as a yoga teacher through Yogaphysio, her background training in psychology and and over 30 years experience as a psychology practitioner. Barbara enjoys being physically active, regularly engaging in cycling, bushwalking and water sports. She has long recognised the value of exercise not only for increasing physical fitness but also enhancing psychological well being. When Barbara started yoga she was curious about what it was and how it might benefit her. She found it helpful in reducing tension, in restoring a sense of calmness and improving the quality of sleep. She also found that contrary to her earlier assumptions, yoga practices were also energetic and powerful. As she has continued to practice and learn more about the underlying principles of yoga, she has been fascinated to discover that many aspects of modern psychology are consistent with (and possibly have been borrowed from) ancient yogic concepts and practices. Concerned that many years of mainly sedentary work was taking a toll on her health Barbara decided to embark on a new career direction by training to become a certified yoga teacher. This provided an opportunity to explore how sustained and regular practice effected her body. She discovered that as well as increasing her energy levels, strength, flexibility and balance, many long term aches and pains disappeared or reduced significantly. As well as demonstrating how we tend to underestimate the body’s capacities to self heal, this has also strengthened her resolve to keep up her regular practice! Yoga for the Over 50‘s provides an opportunity for older people to explore yoga postures in a safe and supported way. In each class participants are guided through a series of movements which use all of the major muscle groups and joints throughout the body. Regular practice results in incremental changes throughout the body, energy levels and an increased sense of well being. One aspect of yoga that Barbara loves is what she terms the “Aha” moment: the moment of realizing that your body in now doing easily something you have never done before. Such is the gentle power of Yoga.

Ms Danica Kohn

Biography:
Danica Kohn is a qualified family yoga teacher (RYT200), a Yoga for the Special Child practitioner and qualified Primary and Secondary teacher (BEd P-12). Danica is passionate about making yoga accessible to everyone, specialising in yoga for pre and post-natal women, infants, children and teens including those with special needs. Danica is a mother of two young boys (and a new baby), who have both practiced yoga since before they can remember. Danica has practiced yoga for many years. Before children, her focus was on the physical benefits of yoga: flexibility, strength, fluidity, stillness and balance. When she became pregnant with her first child her interest grew into passion and her focus shifted to the deeper connection between the mind and body and the sense of calm and peace it created. Now, as a teacher, yoga is a source of inspiration and lifelong learning and an opportunity to share the gift of yoga with others. Danica's teaching integrates her training and personal experience of yoga.
