About Verbund Katholischer Kliniken

The VKKD clinical complex is the largest medical network in Düsseldorf, comprising over 40 specialized clinics, centers, and institutes. Each year, more than 150,000 patients from Germany and abroad receive diagnostics and treatment here.

Key certifications:

  • Certified Bowel Cancer Center (German Cancer Society)
  • Reference Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery (DGAV)

  • Reference Center for Hernia Surgery
  • Endoprosthetics Center with maximum range of services

  • Certified High-Frequency Ultrasound Center (DGK & DGTHG)

  • Quality certificate for Emergency Cardiology (DGK)

  • Certified by the German Diabetes Society for treating diabetic patients

Oncology

VKKD prioritizes the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer. Its interdisciplinary approach ensures comprehensive care. Regular tumor boards enable individualized, effective treatment strategies.

The Oncology, Hematology, and Palliative Medicine Clinic, led by Prof. A. Giagounidis, offers high-level care for blood disorders and performs autologous transplantation. The in-house laboratory supports precise hematological diagnostics. With 28 ongoing clinical trials, patients gain early access to new cancer therapies and vaccines.

Patients requiring radiation therapy are referred to the Radiation Oncology Clinic under Prof. A. Hartmann, equipped with three linear accelerators and advanced technology.

Surgery

A major focus is abdominal surgery, including oncologic and minimally invasive procedures, hernia repairs, and coloproctology. Cutting-edge techniques are used to treat cancers of the stomach, intestine, liver, and pancreas, as well as metastases and complex hernias. The Da Vinci robotic system is used in over 90% of surgeries by Dr. med. K. Zarras. The Hernia Treatment Center he leads is the only certified expert center of its kind in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Vascular Surgery

The Vascular Surgery Clinic specializes in life-threatening aneurysms of the aorta and major arteries in the chest and abdomen. The clinic performs unique laparoscopic aortic bypass surgeries through small abdominal incisions.

Gastroenterology

Early detection of gastrointestinal and internal organ diseases is a priority. Led by Dr. med. C. Weik, the Gastroenterology Clinic performs endoscopic diagnostics for over 250 patients weekly, with immediate therapeutic intervention when necessary.
