Dr Andrew Apel has particular interests in corneal and refractive surgery. He has been performing such surgery since 1992. After completing his ophthalmology training in Brisbane, he undertook two years of subspecialty in a Corneal and External Disease Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada. Dr Apel performs surgeries which include corneal transplants, cataracts and high definition cataract and implant surgery, pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft, and anterior segment trauma repair. Other refractive surgical procedures involve intraocular lenses and the Visian implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) for treatment of astigmatism. He also performs the newer treatment for keratoconus, Riboflavin Crosslinking, and to facilitate the monitoring of keratoconus patients has opened the Keratoconus Care Clinic. Dr Apel is assisted at The Eye Health Centre by seven optometrists who provide technical expertise in complex contact lens fitting.
