General anesthesia is used for the procedure. An incision is made in one of 3 places:
» Periareolar - around the nipple, disguising the scar where the darkly-colored skin ends.
» Infra-mammary fold - in the crease under your breast, hiding the scar in the fold and under your breast.
» Axillary - in the arm pit, hiding the scar in a crease.
One approach may be more appropriate for your anatomy than others. Your surgeon will discuss this with you.
The implant is placed either behind or in front of the pectoralis muscle, inflated with saline if appropriate, and the incision is closed. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
