He had his schooling in Sainik School Purulia, West Bangal, India which is a public school with emphasis on military training and discipline. He did his graduation in medical science (MBBS) from Nilratan Sircar Medical College & Hospital, University of Calcutta in 1979 and completed his Master of Surgery degree in General Surgery in 1983 from the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGME&R), Kolkata, also under the University of Calcutta. Thereafter he joined the State medical service and served in rural health centres and Peripheral Medical Colleges.
