Chiropractor Consultation

Chiropractors are primary health-care professionals that specialise in the diagnosis,treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems withthe joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves, especially related to the spine.

Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, oftengentle, specific spinal manipulation to free joints in the spine or other areasof the body that are not moving properly. Apart from manipulation,chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including ice, heat, ultrasound,exercise and acupuncture as well as advice about posture and lifestyle.

Although chiropractors are best known for treatingback and neck pain, which they do very well, patients also consultchiropractors regarding a range of other, related conditions.

Physiotherapy

 

Biomechanical assessment

Anna Hawrot and Chloe Witts at theHardwicke & Quedgeley Chiropractic Clinic are now qualified BiomechanicsTrainers through Intelligent TrainingSystems TM.

We can use specific screening tests toassess biomechanical alignment and find areas of weakness around the pelvis,spine and nervous system.

We then use simple yet effectiveexercises that you can then perform at home to improve specific areas flaggedfrom your assessment results. This means you can actually improve the alignmentof your spine and pelvis at home! Other screening tests may be performed on theupper and lower limb to get a full picture of your biomechanics and the way youmove.

When the imbalances have beenaddressed and improved, we then use further stages to make this last. We lookto stabilise your biomechanical improvement by using specific core stabilityexercises and gradually re-introduce functional movements and exercises whenready.

This process can prevent injuries fromoccurring or re-occurring, improve performance and help you to move moreefficiently. 

 

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is the application of coldfor the treatment of injury or pain. It reduces temperature of the damaged area,which helps to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. This can be used in theform of an ice pack, crushed ice, or cold water submersion, depending on thearea to be treated. Your therapist may use this, or ice massage as a form oftreatment, or advise you to use it at home.

 

Dry Needling

Dry needle therapy is a form of acupuncture that isused for the treatment of pain related to injury of muscles and other softtissue structures in the body. Anna Hawrot DC, the chiropractor at theHardwicke and Quedgeley Chiropractic Clinic is trained in this technique andshe uses it as an adjunct to her many other treatment techniques.

 

Exercise Therapy

Alongside other forms of treatment, yourtherapist may use exercise therapy by prescribing specific exercises related toyour condition. This helps to increase the speed of your recovery and can beused as part of your self-management. Mobility and stretching exercises canhelp to reduce pain, muscle spasm and increase range of movement andflexibility.

Other types of exercises are used toincrease stability and strength and prevent your condition from re-occurring.Further progressions may be needed for specific sports in order to increasefitness and adapt muscle strength so that the body can cope with the demands ofthe sport or activity again.

 

Pilates

Here at the Hardwicke and QuedgeleyChiropractic Clinic we offer a rehabilitation service for the spine which usesdeep muscle exercise techniques, similar to those used in pilates. Here, we usea one-to-one appointment and tailor your exercises to your individualcondition. This may be to increase the strength of the muscles that stabilisethe spine, hips, pelvis or neck and shoulders. It helps to relax other musclesthat may be over-working and protect the joints of the spine. These types ofexercises can be used to prevent injury in sports and keep fit.

 

Posture Management

At the Hardwicke & Quedgeley Clinic,we include postural examination as part of our assessments and use posture managementwith most of our patients. Posture management helps to strengthen weaknessesaround the lower back, shoulders and neck that may contribute towards pain anddysfunction, and also helps to prevent injuries and pain from occurring. Wegive detailed advice on posture and use it along side our spinal rehabilitationservice. The muscles used in maintaining and strengthening posture are similarto those strengthened in the spinal rehabilitation exercises.

 

Spinal Rehabilitation - Neck and Back Injury

Following an injury to the neck orback, the muscles around the spine can be left very weak, or may have even beenthe cause of the injury in the first place.

At The Hardwicke & QuedgelelyChiropractic Clinic, our spinal rehabilitation service focuses on corestability exercises – exercises used to strengthen the deep, small, musclesaround the spine, often ones that are used to maintain good posture. Evidencesuggests that strengthening these muscles helps to prevent re-occurrence ofback or neck pain. Patients will receive one-to-one sessions to suit theirindividual condition and will be given a plan to perform at home. This improvesthe self management of the condition which can be used along side treatmentsessions with your chiropractor or sports therapist and also be maintainedafter a course of treatment has finished.

 

Sports Injury Rehabilitation - Strapping and Taping

Along side sports injuryrehabilitation, we use a variety of different taping techniques. Strapping ortaping can be applied to aid the return to sport of an injured athlete. At theHardwicke & Quedgeley Chiropractic Clinic we use a range of differenttaping techniques. We the use kinesiology taping technique, and from November2011, we have just started using the new Rock taping technique, which can helpto decrease swelling, reduce muscle spasm and enhance performance. 

The key to the tape is the way it isapplied. Our therapists have attended additional courses so that we can tapespecifically to your injury or problem. Taping is not just used for injuries,it can help to reduce muscle spasm and improve posture too.

 

Sports Therapy

 

STT - Soft Tissue Therapy

Within our Chiropractic, SportsTherapy and Massage appointments, softtissuetherapy is frequently used at the Hardwicke and Quedgeley Chiropractic Clinic.This is the assessment and treatment of pain, injury or spasm involving thesoft tissue structures i.e the muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Massageand manual therapy can be used to directly treat these structures. Jointmobilisation or manipulation can also be used to compliment this to reducepain, spasm and restriction of movement.

 

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is the use ofpressure points to reduce areas of hyperirritability or spasm within themuscle, otherwise known as ‘knots’. These are points that can be felt by thetherapist where taut areas of tightness are present. Pain may be felt where thetrigger point is, or referred pain may be experienced higher or lower to thatarea. Trigger Point release uses a compression over the point of spasm, whichcauses a reflex for the tightness to relax. Other techniques may be used alongside this such as massage and stretching.

 

Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy can be used toincrease the healing rate in acute injuries, where the therapist is unable touse massage due to the stage of healing or pain. It may also be used forchronic injuries where there has been improper rehabilitation or treatment andscar tissue is present. Sound waves are used on very specific settings relatedto your injury, which can increase energy to the cells within the tendon, ligamentor muscle for example. This is a bit like a ‘micro-massage’ and you don’t feelanything.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep massage helps to increase bloodflow, reduce muscle spasm and increase flexibility. It also helps to increaserecovery between training sessions for athletes by flushing out waste productsin the muscles that build up with training, new exercise regimes or trainingfor long periods of time.

Regular massage helps to preventmuscles from shortening over time and therefore can prevent pain or injury,particularly muscle strains. Deep tissue massage does not necessarily use deeppressure, normally a range of different pressures are used to suit theindividual.

HQCC has therapists that are experts in providing deep tissue massage.

 

Full Body Massage

Full body massage may be used forrelaxation or for recovery from training and sports that use a lot of musclesfor example, swimming, running and team sports. This type of massage usesdifferent stroke techniques towards the heart. Different pressures may be useddepending on the individual and reason for treatment. It generally starts withlighter strokes, increasing in pressure throughout the massage.

Sports Massage

Sports massage is the use of differentmassage techniques for athletes or those suffering with areas of tightness ormuscle spasm. Different types of massage strokes can be used depending onwhether the patient needs to increase recovery and lymph drainage, improveflexibility or muscle spasm. Pre- event massage can be used before competitionto warm up the muscles and loosen any areas of tightness. Alternatively, it canbe used after an event to help with recovery. Anna Hawrot qualified as a chiropractor at the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic in 2007. Immediately after graduating she joined the Hardwicke and Quedgeley Chiropractic Clinic and took over the reins in January 2011 to become the Clinic Director.

Anna prides herself in her professionalism and her warm and friendly personality which is very popular with her patients. Anna is keen to progress her professional development and frequently attends seminars and courses around the world. Anna is qualified in:

Biography:

Chloe Witts is our Sports Therapist at HQCC. As well as clinical sports therapy, she provides our rehabilitation and spinal rehabilitation service. Research supports that rehabilitation is imperative for optimum patient outcome in musculoskeletal conditions.

Chloe holds a degree in BSc(Hons) Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation which she completed through the University of the West of England. When graduating she was also presented with the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers award through the University. Since graduating she has gained a vast amount of experience working with the general public, General Practitioner referrals for exercise prescription and working with amateur and elite athletes and sports clubs. She has experience working in sports injury clinics, rehabilitation gyms, as well as covering pitch-side first aid for football, disability football, female and male rugby and hockey.

Chloe is currently taking her master degree in MSc Sports Injury Rehabilitation through the University of Salford. She travels once a month during winter months to attend intense, practical workshops and lectures from some of the top professionals in Physiotherapy, injury rehabilitation, and Strength and Conditioning.  She hopes to use her masters degree to specialise further in spinal rehabilitation.

Chloe enjoys keeping fit herself. She trains using a variety of cardiovascular, flexibility, strength, power and core exercises at the gym. She loves running outdoors and enjoys both road and off-road training. In 2013, she re-joined her Karate club in Stroud; where she previously won the girls national fighting championships for two years running. She hopes to continue grading and competing once more.

Melissa qualified with a Masters of Chiropractic from the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic in South Wales in 2010.

After graduation Melissa spent three years in South Yorkshire working within two Chiropractic clinics where, along with establishing a patient base, she was able to develop her knowledge of chiropractic and patient management. Melissa is also very proud to have been presented with the Graham Heale award for the 2010/2011 provisional registration training scheme (PRTs) candidate of the year. This is a very special award as it was set up in honour of the late Graham Heale, a very well respected individual both within and outside of Chiropractic communities.

Melissa is always keen to expand her knowledge of chiropractic to ensure she brings the best care to her patients. She is currently undertaking the Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (CCEP) course, to expand her keen interest in biomechanics of the extremities and their role in back and neck pain.

Melissa grew up in Gloucestershire, where she spent much of her childhood in the outdoors, which has influenced her to take an active role in her health and wellbeing.

Stuart Kedge qualified from the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic and since graduating has worked in Maidenhead, Marlow and, most recently, Cheltenham.

He enjoys treating people from all walks of life and feels everyone could benefit from chiropractic care. Due to his knowledge and love of sport (in particular golf and hockey), raising the awareness of chiropractic to the sporting community is something that he is very passionate about. Working with patients to recover from their sporting injury or help them improve their technique is very rewarding.

Due to his years of sports training from top-level coaches and research into the biomechanics of the golf swing it is easy to see why he has such great results with golfers. He feels that the unique way chiropractic targets the nervous system and not only treats injuries but also enhances musculoskeletal performance.

However it is more than just athletes he treats and enjoys nothing more than having a patient, who started in crippling pain, reporting they can now play outside with their children or get back to simply walking their dog like they used to.

Stuart, like all chiropractors, enjoys fine-tuning and furthering his qualifications attending a number of courses to give the patient the best treatment possible. He is qualified in:

After qualifying as a massage therapist Jannene started work at Hardwicke & Quedgley Chiropractic Clinic in 2006 and also helps run a hotel spa. She is a member of the Complementary Therapists Association and operates to a strict code of ethical practice as well as undertaking regular professional development.
