Dermal Fillers

One of the main changes we notice with age is the loss of volume, particularly in the cheeks and lips. This is where dermal fillers are extremely effective. They are also very effective in plumping out larger, more established wrinkles such as those that extend from the nose to the lip (the nasolabial folds).

Lips

Soft fillers can be used to enhance the body and the boarders of the lips, giving back a natural-looking youthfulness. These fillers are usually made from a naturally occurring complex sugars, and can be used to create volume and decrease the lines that form around the lips that cause lipstick to bleed.

Wrinkles and Folds

Dermal fillers can be placed below the skins surface to literally ‘fill in’ or ‘plump up’ the wrinkles and folds that remain when our face is at rest. They can also be used to enhance and restore volume in areas such as the mid face and the cheekbone area, and to provide a more youthful conture to the lower face and jaw line.

Prior to your treatment you will need to have a consultation with one of our medical practitioners to ascertain your suitability for treatment.

A treatment involves a series of injections depending on the area being treated. In some instances, a numbing cream or topical analgesia will be used to help to numb the area. The procedure takes between 15-30mins, and the results are instant. There may be some minor swelling and mild bruising after the procedure and clients often have anto accelerate the healing of this.

The longevity of the results is dependent on a multitude of factors, including the patient, the location of the injection, and the particular product used. Generally results last from 6 months in areas such as the lips,  up to 12 months in areas such as the nasolabial folds. Subsequent treatments will almost always have a longer duration of effect.

Laser Hair Removal

We have a culture that views facial and body hair as unattractive and there is now a baffling array of hair removal alternatives that all claim to solve the problem for you. But what works, what doesn’t and how do you know if it is safe?

Everyone knows about shaving, waxing and plucking but these are painful, tedious, repetitive and restrictive options often resulting in ingrown hairs, pigmented scarring and increased hair growth.

In recent times there has been an explosion in the number of discount laser hair removal centres claiming to rid you of hair; pain free, forever and at an alarmingly discounted price. I get asked all the time whether these really work and are they safe? I always say, “Do your homework before you let anyone touch you with an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or laser system.” We have become quite desensitised as to how potentially dangerous these hair removal systems are as they become more accessible. They can cause blisters, burns and scars and need to be operated by qualified, skilled staff.

The first step is to research the equipment. Not all hair reduction systems are created equal. Some are excellent but the cheaper ones are too low-powered to effectively kill the follicles and only temporarily disable the hair allowing them to regenerate over time and continue to grow.

Look for clinics that use systems that are able to be individualised to you and your particular needs. So many systems out there are designed to be basic to use and require little or no training for staff. They are in essence, ‘point and shoot’ machines that only give a few very low setting options that may not be that effective. Good machines allow the operator to individualise the treatment based on your age, skin colour, hair colour, hair thickness and allow them to adjust the energy output.

Scar Removal

There aren’t too many people who go through their lives without accumulating  a scar or two. Whether these are from a traumatic incident or from surgery; for some, these marks are unsightly and disfiguring.

There are numerous causes of scars and an equally as diverse number of treatments that claim to reduce or remove them. Getting  wonderful results with scarring treatments is achievable, but requires considered and professional advice on what is the right treatment, considering the severity and type of the scar.

The first step is to have the scar assessed in a . From here you will be guided as to what is the most appropriate treatment for you, how many treatments you may require and what is a realistic expectation to have given the severity and type of the scar. We have a number of extremely effective options at Clear Complexions.

Fraxel re:store® Laser Resurfacing – is a new and extremely effective way to treat surgical and trauma scars. Fraxel® causes microscopic, pixel-like damage to the treated area in the skin, leaving most of the surrounding skin intact. This stimulates the body’s natural healing process, breaking up the fibrous tissue and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

The number of treatments required depends on the severity and type of the scar but a Clear Complexions nurse will be able to give you an indication during your consultation.

Spider Veins Treatment

Commonly located on the nose, cheeks and chin they appear as small red vessels under the skin. If left untreated, these vessels will continue to dilate and become more noticeable. Prevention, early treatment and ongoing maintenance yield the best

The most common causes are:

  • Environmental - sun exposure and weather extremes
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Pregnancy
  • Medical conditions such as high blood pressure
  • Pressure e.g. squeezing acne or  glasses pressing on the face

Treatment is as much about repairing the existing damage as it is about prevention of further damage by improving the overall strength and health of your skin. A nurse will have a  with you before recommending treatment in order to assess the extent of damage and to give you realistic expectations of what to expect. They do this by using state-of -the-art imaging software that visualises your skin two millimetres below the skin revealing the extent of the blood vessel damage under your skin. From there they can make recommendations and perform any test patches that may be necessary.

Clear Complexions is excited to now be offering the and  lasers. These lasers allow us to focus on many more layers in the skin than possible before. The Excel laser targets those obvious, larger broken vessels that can be so resistant to other treatments, while the Genesis focuses on that deeper, diffuse redness that’s just beyond the reach of .   The number and type of  treatments required depends on the size of the vessel, the length of time it has been visible, the general health of the skin and any underlying medical causes for the vascular damage. Your nurse will be able to advise you of the best treatment or combination and estimated number of treatments required at the time of your .

Acne Scars Treatment

The treatment of pitted acne scars requires both the breaking up of the fibrous scar tissue and the production of new collagen to fill out the scar. Traditional approaches – such as deep chemical peeling, conventional lasers, and abrasion therapies such as microdermabrasion - usually achieve only moderate results or, worse, they destroy healthy tissue along with the scar.

Acne scars occur as the skin heals from acne lesions. Acne scars are typically indented or pitted or, giving the skin a pox-marked or wavy appearance, or pigmented marks that remain on the skin years after the lesion has healed.

Unlike other procedures,  treatment removes damaged skin on the surface and reaches deep into the skin to stimulate collagen remodeling. In this way, Fraxel® treatment improves the elasticity, texture and tone of your damaged skin while keeping your healthy tissue intact, which minimises downtime. The  is widely regarded as the gold standard for the treatment of pitted acne scars.

The number of treatments required depends on the extend of scarring, and the age and condition of the skin.

Acne Treatment

It is estimated that up to ninety percent of teenagers and a significant number of adults suffer from acne (pimples). At Clear Complexions Clinics we know how debilitating the condition can be and that it can cause both physiological and emotional scars. Our aim is to increase self esteem, reduce the number and severity of breakouts and to minimise the scarring associated with acne. The Clear Complexions Clinic nurses are highly skilled at working with young people and their families for the best possible outcomes.

Acne can be well controlled with a treatment program designed by our qualified nurses that incorporates medical grade skincare,  LED light based treatment, and a new generation of procedure peels.

These can all be tailored to work alongside and support any medication prescribed by your doctor. We will not hesitate to refer you to your GP or dermatologist if your acne is not improving in the way we think it should be.

Don’t let acne hold you back any longer! to start your treatment program today.

Primary causes of acne

The underlying causes of acne have been widely studied and genetics and hormones are the primary impacting factors. Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous glands and excess skin cell production, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads and cysts. In some cases however it may be an external factor that can be causing, if not increasing, the severity of breakouts.

Pigmentation Treatment

Some skin pigmentation is inevitable in the harsh Australian climate. Whether your pigmentation is sun induced or is a result of hormonal activity (melasma/chloasma) it ages your appearance and often erodes your confidence. At Clear Complexions Clinics our nurses have the latest in cutting edge technology and medical grade skincare to remove this pigmentation and turn back the clock, giving you back your clear complexion and helping you to keep it. Our nurses understand this condition thoroughly and will help you achieve the healthiest, clearest skin possible.

Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, inflammatory, immune based skin condition that affects 2.6% of Australians (Cimmino, 2007). It usually affects those with a family history; however, it is possible to develop psoriasis with no obvious family history. Risk factors such as smoking, high alcohol consumption, highly processed foods and stress are also believed to increase the chances of developing the condition in predisposed people.

For those that suffer with psoriasis, it can range from a chronic irritation to a debilitating condition that can impair their everyday lives, causing physical pain but very often psychological and emotional pain too.

As a condition that for most people requires some form of lifelong management, the nurses at Clear Complexions can form a treatment plan to assist your control of flare ups.

There are many topical prescription creams and ointments currently available, many using steroids. These can all be used very effectively for short periods to avoid thinning of the skin. Ultra Violet Light Therapy is also used in more severe, chronic cases, as are immune suppressant drugs.

The infrared light of the Omnilux Plus stimulates the cells essential for destroying bacteria, clearing damaged tissue and building new cells to form healthy new tissue.  This treatment can offer a drug and UV free alternative to help boost the immune function and calm the flare ups that inevitably occur. Omnilux Plus is also able to be used with topical treatments when appropriate.

Skin Diagnostics

Being able to view the skin below the surface is a vital part of any consultation. It obviously allows the Doctor/Nurse to see any damage that may not be at the surface yet, and having that knowledge can sometimes alter the choice of treatment they make. The images are also fantastic for the education of the client. Being able to see the extent of sun damage 30 years of sun-worshipping has caused, makes it easier to understand why more than one treatment is required.

Your Clear Complexions nurse will be looking at your vascular and pigmentation damage as well as the UV damage. This is never good for your self esteem, in fact it can be down-right shattering, but it is better to know and can be a good wake up call to finally take care of your skin.

I can’t stress enough how important this step is in the initial consultation, both for the safety and efficacy of the treatments, so much so that if the clinic you are at does not do this, move on to a better one. It is like having orthopaedic surgery without first having an x-ray!

Taking normal ‘before’ photos is also an important part of any consultative process. I have to say, there is nothing more satisfying than getting out the ‘before’ photos for clients who have completed their treatments. They forget so easily what their skin was like, and it is a real thrill to see how far they have come.
