Rhinoplasty

Reshaping your nose can be one of the most effective ways of changing your appearance. It can also be used in cases where you are experiencing breathing difficulties due to the shape of your nose.

 

As the nose reshaping can be carried out by a surgeon operating through the nostrils there should be little or no scaring resulting from the surgery.

 

Nose improvement is usually permanent as it involves the reshaping of the underlying cartilage of the nose. However, cartilage may continue to grow naturally after the operation and may also take some time to settle its appearance following the procedure.

 

Recovery should take about 2 weeks before normal activity is resumed with bandages being in place for the first week following the procedure.

Rhinoplasty: Rhinoplasty is the medical term for reshaping of the nose or corrective surgery of the nose. It is one of the most common facial plastic surgery procedures performed. This is because the nose has the greatest impact on how a person looks. Nose surgery can be performed to change consequence of genetics, birth defect or nasal injury. It can be done to enhance your appearance and/or to improve your nasal breathing. Modern rhinoplasty (nose surgery) is a surgical art form. The days of a scooped out, turned up little nub of a nose should be long gone. Today, the emphasis is placed on looking at your nose individually and to ‘customize’ your Rhinoplasty procedure based upon your specific needs and nose anatomy. A natural looking nose that is in harmony with the rest of your face is the aim of surgery. Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) can be performed after the skeleton of the face is fully developed. This usually occurs in young adults by the age of sixteen.

Rhinoplasty: Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) This procedure reshapes, reduces and reconstructs the nose. The nose is made up of bone (bridge) and cartilage (tip). Unsightly deformities can take many forms including :• a hump on the bridge • an over-sized tip • a pointed tip • a nose that is too long (crooked) (common)• a short nose (uncommon) • a deviated nose  Many patients tell me that they have been unhappy about their nose for many years indicating that they think long and hard before deciding to explore or undergo surgery. Following rhinoplasty many patients say they regretted not having had the operation carried out years earlier. Age Group:A rhinoplasty is rarely carried out before the individual is fully grown. Beyond late teens a rhinoplasty can be carried out at any age in adulthood. There is no strict upper limit for rhinoplasty in terms of age. The Procedure:The majority of rhinoplasties are carried out under sedation and local anaesthetic as day cases. 10% require a general anaesthetic but can be treated as day case patients and only 5% are hospitalised overnight. An external splint is applied to the nose to maintain the improved shape. The splint is made of light material (steri-strips) and it is easily removed at the appropriate time – 7-10 days following the procedure. Operation Time: A reconstructive rhinoplasty, i.e. previous and failed rhinoplasty(s) or previous severe trauma, may take two to two and a half hours and might entail cartilage grafts or bone grafts. Recovery Time:If the nasal bone has been fractured the eyes will usually be bruised, otherwise bruising is remarkably slight or not at all. Bruising resolves in about seven days. The external splint is removed after seven days, by which stage you should be able to go out socially or return to work.
