Reduce the prominence of your ears

Ear surgery (otoplasty) is used to reduce an ear prominence. Ears are either brought closer to the head or reduced in size. This procedure can also be used to remove asymmetry.

Ear surgery is often carried out early in life, from four onwards, as it can improve a child’s social experience. The operation can also be carried out in later life if not done earlier.

Length

Otoplasty typically lasts between two and three hours.

Procedure

The reshaping and positioning of the ear is created by removal and sculpting of cartilage within the ear or by the use of stitches to reshape the existing cartilage. The desired final shape of the ear determines where incisions and work on the cartilage are carried out.

Recovery

Normal activities can be resumed within a week with strenuous activity possible within one or two months.

Risks

Risks with this procedure are low. Clots are an infrequent occurrence and usually easily corrected. Infection is possible but again usually mild and easily treated.

Otoplasty: The term "otoplasty" literally means "reshaping or reforming ears." Most commonly the procedure is performed to correct prominent ears by setting them back closer to the head. Ears come in all shapes and sizes, however, an "otoplasty" may refer to correction of a number of different ear deformities. Children, long the victims of cruel nicknames like “Dumbo” are the most likely candidates for otoplasty, but this surgery can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. It is usually best to have an otoplasty just prior to going to school. There is no medical benefit to waiting longer and a child who has never previously noticed his or her ears can become very self-conscious once the teasing has started. In adults of all ages, protruding ears are frequently unsightly and can even lead to unhappiness with appearance and the inability to select hairstyles. Children usually have otoplasty under general anaesthesia (completely asleep) while many adults choose local anaesthesia with sedation. Both adults and children tend to go home the same day. The incision for otoplasty is hidden in the crease behind the ear. The cartilage is sculpted and often sutures placed to hold the cartilage in its new position.

The most common procedures are bringing the ears closer to the head (often called ear pinning), reducing the size of big ears, or reshaping various bends in the cartilage. There is a genetic component to prominent ears, common in the Irish and other Celtic races. The procedure can be performed at any age after the ears have reached full size, usually around five to six years of age. Even when only one ear appears to protrude, surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better balance. There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing.

Otoplasty: Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping)Setting back prominent ears . The most prominent ears often lack a normal fold, and sometimes one ear is more prominent than the other. What can be done? When an ear is noted to be prominent within the first few weeks of life, it is possible to reshape it by applying a small splint to the rim. The cartilage or gristle of a new-born’s ear is very floppy and easily remoulded and after several weeks of splintage a permanent correction can be achieved..  Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty is an operation which adjusts the shape of the cartilage within the ear to create the missing folds and to allow the ear to lie closer to the side of the head. Because the operation is carried out from behind the ears, a small scar is left close to the groove between the ear and the side of the head.  The procedure can be carried out under local anaesthetic. Where the lobe of the ear is especially large, a small procedure to reduce its size may also be required. An incision line is made behind the ear close to the grove between the ear and the side of the head.   A small protective dressing is usually worn after the surgery until the stitches are removed at between 5-10 days after surgery. the stitches well.  Pinnaplasty is also performed during the teenage years and in adult life, when either a local or general anaesthetic can be used. . In a small number of patients (approximately 3%) the scars can become thick and red, and may require further treatment.  Infection is not common, but should this occur it would require treatment with antibiotics and regular dressing changes.  There is a small risk that the repair may not hold properly, and further adjustment surgery is occasionally required. The ears are often a little numb after the procedure, and this usually takes several weeks to settle.

Otoplasty: Protruding ears (“Bat Ears”) is an inherited condition and can cause significant embarrassment especially if a person is constantly teased. In all people the ears are not completely symmetrical and it is usual for one ear to be further out than the other. There are two ways in which the ears can protrude more than usual: 1. The inner part of the ear flap (concha) might be unusually long or large.2. The angle between the concha and the outer part of the ear flap (helix) might not be properly formed so the helix extends sideways rather than going backwards (the usual position). Often both of the above conditions exist in severe cases of protruding ears. The purpose of an ear reshape operation (otoplasty) is to reduce the distance between the side of the head and the protruding part of the ear to about 15mm (1/2”). Ear reshape (otoplasty) can also (a) reduce the size and projection of the concha if it is too big and/or (b) establish the normal angle between the concha and the helix. It is not usually possible to reduce the size of very large ears that have a normal shape due to the complex shape of the ear. The Dublin Cosmetic Surgery Centre has successfully performed ear reshapes on hundreds of women and men over the last 20 years.
