A guide to dentistry in Ireland

Ireland's economy has experienced a breathless rise from Western Europe's poorest nation to the top of the world's wealth indicators. Over 30 years of E.U. membership has helped shape Ireland's health system into a modern and highly regulated model of good practice.

Interest from Irish patients have increased substantially for dentistry in neighbouring Northern Ireland where dental treatments cost less than in the Republic.

Benefits of Irish Dentistry

Regular checkups are a vital part of good oral healthcare and a local dentist is by far the best choice. A trusting relationship with your local dentist has immense benefits: Dental emergencies can be dealt with by a healthcare professional who knows your medical history inside out. Even for more expensive treatments the value of this close working knowledge can far outweigh price considerations, ensuring an ongoing beneficial, oral regimen.

Dentists in Ireland - Qualifications

Ireland has 2 dental colleges with an addtional college offering specialty training. The course is 5 years, followed by 1 year of vocational training. Successful graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Science.

There are two recognized specialties: Oral surgery and Orthodontics.

There is no mandatory continuing education but its practice is strongly recommended by all professional associations and the Dental Council. Courses in Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontics and Oral Surgery are among the continuing education options available in the country's dental schools.

Dentists in Ireland - Additional Information
Organizations

The Dental Council is the statuatory organization responsible for dentistry in Ireland. It oversees the standard of dental education and dentistry in general. The Council holds a registry of all those permitted to perform dentistry within the state: Registration is mandatory.

There are a number of professional associations covering the dental sector workers. Over 80% of Ireland's dentists are members of the Irish Dental Association. The association in its present form is over 80 years old and with its historic beginnings in the British Dental Assocation is one of the worlds oldest established dental associations.

Dental Ethics

Irish dentists are required by the 1985 Dental Act to: Safeguard the health of patients; promote oral health within the population and maintain the highest ethical standards with the profession. To these ends dentists must not overcharge, recommend unnessecary or damaging proceedures, create false expectation or in any way mislead their patients.

The ethical guidelines follow and expand upon those issued by the Council of Euopean Dentists, which define the core ethical values of European dentistry.

Complaints

The Dental Council has the power to deal with complaints against registered dentists. It can issue warnings, fines, suspend or remove a dentist from the dental register. Patients may also take direct action through the civil courts.

Data Protection

Ireland has a Data Protection Commissioner and a number of acts covering the protection and accessibility of personal data. A comprehensive website gives all information relative to data protection - see the resources section below.

Dock Road, Galway Review by K - Were you pleased with the treatment?
My teeth look fantastic! I was really concious before of the gaps, uneveness and shade of my teeth - I've quite a wide smile so whenever I saw photos of myself all I'd be able to focus on were my imperfect teeth... you know it's time to sort them out when you start to avoid smiling! Now I think my smile is naturally beautiful - I'll be showing these off as much as I can! Before treatment started I had a pretty good idea of what to expect - Dr Moore made a mock-up of the expected final product for me to approve, and explained how he'd get there. Financially everything was very clear, there were no surpises and I think I had excellent value!

The Well Road, Ratoath Review by johnb - Were you pleased with the treatment?
Due to an unpleasant experience as a child even in my 30s I have a deep rooted (excuse the pun!) fear of visiting the dentist. So when I began to get a constant throbbing pain in my teeth as much as I tried to put off visiting the dentist eventually the unbearable pain meant I had no choice. I went to my local dentist and they told me I needed a root canal treatment. I just told them that I wanted to be out of pain so they gave me a course of antibiotics and I never went back. When the pain came back again, my girlfriend began looking up dentists who specialise in treating nervous patients. She found the Ratoath Dental Centre website and made an appointment for me straight away. The evening of the appointment I did feel a bit embarrassed, a grown man sweating at the thoughts of being in the dentist but as I went into the surgery and was introduce to Dr Conor Irwin he stood up and shook my hand and talked me through why I was here. What really struck me about him was that he actaully LISTENED to me and UNDERSTOOD how nervous I was. All we did on the first appointment was talk and come up with a way to treat all the problems I had as a result of my fear. He went through what sedation was, the cost and everything involved in my treatment. I left that dental practice and for the first time i felt myself thinking, "I'm definately coming back here" Now because I was so bad with dentists I did need two appointments but it was well worth the €160 I paid each time. That stuff was amazing!!!! All I remember is going into the surgery then being told it was over and my girlfriend bringing me home. I was at work the next day not a bother on me. I now trust Dr Conor Irwin and will definately be going for my 6 monthly check up with him in future. Thank you so much!!

Old Quarter House, Little Ellen Street, Limerick City Review by Kate - Were you pleased with the treatment?
No treatment was needed yet. Advised to use sensodyne and wait until tooth had settled down. if not to seek treatment. I was not charged even though he had taken two x-rays. He explained everything clearly and could not have been more helpful. I would highly recommend him.

  • In spite of their practice being full, and several of their own patients also needing emergency treatment, they saw and treated me quickly and effectively. They were the only dental surgery open over the bank holiday weekend, so without this help I would have been in agony with an infected jaw for three days.Lucy , UK , 30 Jul 11

Merchants Quay Business Quarter, Frances St, Kilrush Review by Rory - Were you pleased with the treatment?
I was very anxious about going to my dentist as it had been some time since my last dental examination. I need not have been so worried. I was advised of the work that I needed done - the priority/importance and cost. Everything was explained very clearly to me and I was asked to revert back to them if I wanted to proceed with the dental work. I was very happy with all the work that was carried out. The dentist talked me through the procedure. Surprisingly, I was far more relaxed than I had envisaged. Very happy with the results - teeth are white again. I will have no hesitation in keeping my next appointment.

9 Dunville Avenue, Ranelagh, Dublin Review by Graeme - Were you pleased with the treatment?
I am very pleased with result I got from Beechwood dental. Having had a large amount of work done, spread over a few weeks and multiple visits. Dr Peter Casey was very friendly and he took his time to ensure the end result was perfect. I had some very long appointments and was made to feel as comfortable as possible, and received follow up calls the next day to make sure everything was ok. As well as excellent dental care, the clinic is spotlessly clean and all staff very friendly. Lots of little things like text messages to remind you of the appointment, new and up to date magazines and newspapers as well as car parking, and a television on the ceiling makes the whole experience much better. Saturday and evening appointments made fitting the treatment in with work commitments much easier. I have no hesitation in returning for further treatment, and highly recommend Beechwood dental practice
