Rhinoplasty

Reshaping your nose can be one of the most effective ways of changing your appearance. It can also be used in cases where you are experiencing breathing difficulties due to the shape of your nose.

 

As the nose reshaping can be carried out by a surgeon operating through the nostrils there should be little or no scaring resulting from the surgery.

 

Nose improvement is usually permanent as it involves the reshaping of the underlying cartilage of the nose. However, cartilage may continue to grow naturally after the operation and may also take some time to settle its appearance following the procedure.

 

Recovery should take about 2 weeks before normal activity is resumed with bandages being in place for the first week following the procedure.

Rhinoplasty:  The size, shape and length of the nose can all be altered through a nose rehaping (rhinoplasty) operation. The scars are usually all internal and therefore not visible. If the nostrils are to be reduced, there will be minimal scarring which is well hidden in the nostril crease. The bone structure of the nose can be related to that of a frame tent - if we wish to reduce the height of the "ridge", then the sides must be also reduced and brought together to create a new ridge - this will not affect the skin surface which will shrink back on the new frame very well. The lower part of the nose is made up of cartilage and if your nose tip needs to be reduced, a part of this cartilage will be removed. This is carried out at the same time as any corrective bone work and is usually without visible scarring. If your nose is deviated or bent you may be offered a septo-rhinoplasty to straighten the nose. An augmentation rhinoplasty is performed to build up the nose in the case of a flattened bridge or a weak nose tip. The operation will be carried out under a general anaesthetic and take approximately 2 hours. At consultation your Cosmetic Surgeon will examine your nose and advise you on the most appropriate procedure for you.

Rhinoplasty:  The procedure Rhinoplasty surgery aims to improve the appearance of your nose. The surgery aims to reshape the nose to a more aesthetic appearance, in-keeping with your overall facial shape.   What does it involve? The procedure is performed under a general anaesthetic (with you asleep) usually as a day case (in and out of hospital in the same day) or with an overnight stay. The operation is either performed with incisions on the inside of your nose alone (a closed rhinoplasty), or with an additional cut on the columella (the middle part of the nose separating your nostrils – an open rhinoplasty). The skin of the nose is separated from the underlying cartilage and bone - these are then altered to the desired shape prior to the skin being redraped over them. It is complex 3-dimensional surgery that rebuilds your nose from the inside.   What are the benefits? Rhinoplasty surgery will improve the appearance of your nose and often improves your breathing.  A rhinoplasty can straighten your nose, correct a hump, change the shape and size of the tip of your nose, narrow your nose as well as achieve other changes.   How long does the surgery take? The operation itself may take between 45-180 minutes, depending upon the complexity of the operation in your individual case.   What is the recovery period? Your nose will be swollen initially - most of the swelling resolves over 6-weeks (and you will feel quite bunged up initially), but it takes 6-months to 1-year for all the swelling to go down. You will initially have bruising around the eyes which resolves over the first 2-weeks after the operation. There may be some minor nose bleeding after the operation.
