Visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist
Dr Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion MBBS FRCSG MSOphth AM, was born in Kuala Lumpur and obtained her early primary and secondary education at the then Bukit Bintang Girls’ School. Following an impressive academic performance in Singapore at the Raffles Junior College, she enrolled at the prestigious University of Sydney, Australia for her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree under a scholarship offered by the Australian government to outstanding students from Malaysia and other developing nations. She graduated with First Class Honours in 1999. She commenced her postgraduate training in Ophthalmology in 2000 and obtained a Masters of Surgery in Ophthalmology from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2004. She was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2003.
Since 2004, Dr Mae-Lynn has held a full time position as Senior Lecturer and eye specialist at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) in Cheras. In addition to seeing patients at the UKM Eye Centre and performing eye surgeries, she teaches medical students and aspiring eye surgeons enrolled in the UKM postgraduate ophthalmology specialist programme. Furthermore, she conducts research into eye diseases affecting the Malaysian population and has published research in various local and international journals. In recognition of this, she was admitted to the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia, which carries the title, AM (Mal).
Dr Mae-Lynn has successfully completed a one-year fellowship in Vitreo-retinal Surgery (highly specialized internal eye surgery for Retina Detachments and Diabetic Eye Diseases among others) in Singapore. She is currently the only full time Ophthalmologist specializing in Vitreo-retinal Surgery at the Department of Ophthalmology, UKM and spearheads the service and teaching programmes.
Dr Mae-Lynn was appointed as the Head of Department, Department of Ophthalmology, UKM in April 2010 and as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, UKM in October 2010 in recognition of her leadership talent, clinical experience and research endeavours. She very finely balances her roles as administrator, teacher, researcher, clinician, surgeon, mother and wife.
