What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a surgical procedure that transplants fat taken from the patient’s body to areas of the face and body in order to restore the volume lost because of the process of aging. The procedure is also called fat grafting or fat injection. Typically fat is transferred to the breasts, the buttocks, hands and facial features including the lips, chin and cheeks. Fat transfers are also performed to treat acne scarring.

How is Fat Transfer done?

Fat is removed from one area of the body by the surgeon using liposuction. The fat is purified and turned into liquid form. It is then injected into another part of the body to give more volume. The time taken for the procedure depends on the part of the body from which the fat is harvested, the processing of the fat and the part of the body or face where the fat is transferred to. A fat transfer procedure to the buttocks, for example, may take five to eight hours.

Is Fat Transfer painful?

Fat transfer procedures are performed under general anaesthesia, local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the needs of each individual patient. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

Recovery from fat transfer depends on the part of the body to which fat is transferred. The recovery time for patients choosing a fat transfer procedure to their buttocks may be about four to six weeks.

What post-operative care should I take after Fat Transfer?

Patients should rest for a few days after a fat transfer procedure. They should take all prescribed medications correctly and avoid smoking or drinking alcohol. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects for at least a month after the procedure. They should, however start walking as soon as possible to decrease swelling. They should also wear the prescribed compression garments correctly.

Fat Transfer  
During the procedure, the donor area for harvesting fat is prepared in a similar fashion to performing liposuction. The fat is harvested using a special suction cannula so it is not damaged. it is then centrifuged to allow separation of the intact healthy fat cells from those that have damaged. The live fat cells are then injected in the treatment areas using a very fine cannula to place tiny amounts of fat in tunnels which are carefully built up to form layers which restore volume and shape. Between 50% and 60% of the transferred fat survves. This means a certain amount of overcorrection is required which also contributes to some of the swelling following surgery. Fat transfer is often performed in conjunction with other surgical procedures such as a facelift.

Rhinoplasty (nose job) is an operation to alter the shape and size of the nose and if necessary, to improve the nasal airway to allow more air to pass through the nose. The operation is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes between 1-2 hours to perform and requires 1 day in hospital. There are a number of ways a rhinoplasty can be performed depending on the specific features of the nose to be corrected. Essentially, the operation can either be done with all the incisions (cuts) hidden on the inside of the nose, called a closed rhinoplasty, or else with most of the incisions on the inside of the nose and an additional small incision on the skin of the nose half way down the columella (the thin piece of skin in the midline between the tip of the nose and the upper lip), called an open rhinoplasty. Through these access incisions, the nose is reshaped by a number of techniques, including reducing any hump on the top of the nose, augmenting any flatness of the nose with bone grafts, straightening the nose, narrowing the bridge of the nose by breaking the bones of the nose and resetting them, straightening the septum to improve the air passages, and altering the tip of the nose by either removing and sculpting the existing cartilage, or adding more cartilage to give better support. Of course, not all these techniques are required in every rhinoplasty, and some operations may be very simple, whilst others may be very complex. The wounds are then closed with dissolving stitches and the nose is covered with a plaster support.

I can’t thank Mr Mcculley enough for the amazing transformation following a breast augmentation, this has changed my life and given me so much more confidence. From the minute I met Mr Muccully I felt completely at ease and trusted him 100%. Following having a child and losing a little weight I had become very unhappy with my breasts this affected a lot of aspects of my life, it took me a long time to make this decision and I wanted a natural look. Mr Mucculley advised partially under the muscle and gave me some advice around sizing for my frame and the look I wanted after a further consultation I decided to leave the decision to size to Mr Muculley I trusted him and his expertise completely. Valerie his secretary was fantastic at answering my questions and got me booked in working hard to get a date around my work commitments. Mr Muculley saw me on the morning of my surgery and confirmed everything the confidence he has in his work and his knowledge provided me with a lot of reassurance this was important to me before going into surgery. The whole procedure was seamless and recovery advice was given by Mr Mcculley has an open door policy and any questions I had after was answered. His website is incredibly thorough and I was regularly checking things! My hospital stay was pleasant and I was looked after really well there was no rush for me to leave the following day and I was checked by Mr Muculley before being discharged. After years of being concerned over my acne prone skin I had a consultation with the Doctor at Zenith in Harley Street. I had really scarred skin and was really conscious about it. I’m much more confident about it and the scarring has improved massively also recommended supplements which have helped calm my skin down. Can’t recommend highly enough. My skincare regime was pretty basic but now I’ve introduced a calming serum and changed my cleanser it’s seemed to have been less of an irritant and it feels calmer. I’m planning on having a peel just to improve the scarring further and the doctor told me to prep my face first which I’ve been doing. I was really nervous initially and the whole team was so friendly. Thank you.
