Jose Roman was born in Lima, Peru where he obtained his basic medical degree. He was then awarded a British Council Fellowship and he moved to London where he obtained an MSc degree from London University. After this, he completed 6 years of formal specialized training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in different hospitals in London and the Newcastle Region gaining his Membership of the Royal College (UK) in 1991. He then chose New Zealand as his adoptive country obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand O&G College in 1994. When in New Zealand he was awarded a Fellowship by the New Zealand O&G Society for training in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery or keyhole surgery that he completed at the renowned Memorial Medical Centre in Adelaide in 1995.
