Bad Breath Treatment

At The Berkeley Clinic we practice prevention as well as treating dental issues. It is important that we maintain good oral health by looking after our teeth on a day to day basis. Brushing and flossing your teeth help to prevent tartar (calculus) and plaque build up around the teeth and gums. The build up of these bacteria around the teeth can cause decay, gingivitis and eventually tooth loss. It is recommended that you visit a dental hygienist at least every 6 months to have a scale and polish done. This professional cleaning helps eliminate hard tartar from around and under the gumline and will help prevent any of the above problems.

CAD/CAM Dental Restorations

Ceramic reconstruction is an exciting technique that allows crowns, veneers and heavily broken down teeth to be fixed in one visit. Using state of the art technology your tooth can be made without an impression, without temporaries and without metal. This revolutionary technique can make old metal filled teeth look like new.

The Berkeley Clinic is now the centre for CEREC Excellence in Scotland and as such is at the forefront of both teaching this technique to dentists and providing the best CEREC service to our patients.

CEREC Dental Restorations
This revolutionary system allows single visit crowns, veneers and ceramic reconstructions. This differs from more traditional techniques which usually involve at least two visits for a crown or veneer. Often two weeks are needed between visits and patients are left with temporary plastic crowns or veneers for this time. The CEREC 3D system allows patients to leave with their new tooth in around one hour.

Dental Bridges

What is a dental bridge? Where a tooth is missing it can ber replaced by attaching a false tooth into the gap. Unlike traditional plates or detures bridges are designed to stay in place and not be removed by the patient. Dental bridges are held in place by using the tooth or teeth on either side of the gap as an anchor for the false tooth. If a dental bridge is designed well and maintained properly the typical lifespan of the bridge would be 10 to 15 years.

3-Unit Bridge
With a fixed fixed bridge, the false tooth / teeth are anchored to new crowns attached to the teeth either side of the gap. These crowns are usually made from porcelain with the new tooth made from either ceramic or porcelain. This solution is very stable and can be used anywhere in the mouth

Maryland Bridge
Adhesive bridges use very powerful glue to bond a wing to the inner surface of the teeth beside the gap. These wings act as the anchor and support for the false bridge tooth. This technique is usually only suitable for small gaps and front teeth

Dental Crowns

When a tooth is mostly filling or heavily broken down, the best option for restoring and protecting the tooth is by placing a crown. Traditionally crowns have been made from metal and would have porcelain layered on top to try to give a natural looking tooth effect. Because the metal from the crown is dark grey generally this would be seen through the porcelain in particular around the gumline. You may have a crown that looks like this already or know someone that does.

The reason that crowns where traditionally made from metal was to provide support for the weak porcelain on top. At The Berkeley Clinic we use the most up to date technologies and materials offering you the patient a stronger, healthier metal free alternative. Not only is this stronger but it actually looks like a natural tooth

Dentures
Losing your teeth can have a massive negative effect on your confidence, and also impact on your quality of life. If you are an existing denture wearer you may already have experienced difficulty enjoying particular foods you used to enjoy. This may be made worse by improperly balanced or overly worn dentures. As well as not being able to enjoy the foods that you used to enjoy your dentures may have been made in a way that makes them look like false teeth. Additionally your teeth provide some of the structure and support that form the shape of your cheeks. When tooth loss occurs it can result in a lack of facial support, and give you the appearance that you are much older than you actually are. The good news is that our dentures may provide the answer.

Fillings

Many people have concerns and fears over the safety of mercury /amalgam fillings. As such the team at The Berkeley clinic made the collective decision to stop placing mercury fillings over 2.5 years ago.              You may already know that amalgam fillings are made up of mercury, silver, tin, copper and zinc. Mercury makes up 50% of the amalgam.                             We take our patients’ health, care and concerns seriously and to that end we have designed a safe amalgam removal programme that minimises exposure to mercury during the removal of old amalgam fillings.   If you have concerns over your health and amalgam fillings then we can discuss with you at a consultation how we can safely and easily remove these fillings and then reconstruct your teeth using metal free alternatives.

Inman Aligner™
The Inman Aligner may be the answer to giving you straight teeth in as little as 6 weeks.  Traditionally orthodontics or braces can take up to 2 years to have the desired effect in repositioning your teeth. Also the appliances used would be fixed to the teeth and the process would require several visits every 3 to 4 weeks to adjust them. A lot of adults feel that wearing fixed traintrack braces for two years would not be possible due to work or social circumstances, as they believe that braces will be embarrassing.

Sedation for dental treatments

Conscious sedation is widely used as a means of reducing anxiety during dental procedures.

‘Sedation’ is essentially ‘a technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system’ (Wylie Report 1978). Verbal contact is maintained throughout the sedation and although with intravenous and oral sedation there is often some amnesia, the patient is always ‘conscious’.
There are 3 main types of conscious sedation: INHALATION, ORAL and INTRAVENOUS.

Teeth Whitening
Teeth unfortunately go darker and more yellow with age. This is not only due to the passage of time but also from tea, coffee, red wine and other intensely coloured food and drink. At the Berkeley Clinic our teeth whitening techniques is done using the Beyond Whitening system which can gently and effectively whiten teeth. This one hour teeth whitening technique has been shown to be up to four times more effective than so called "laser whitening” and is the most effective whitening system on the market.

TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder- TMD is a group of conditions, often painful, that affect the jaw joint (TMJ) and all of the muscles that control chewing. It is unclear how many people are affected by this debilitating condition however it is clear that most people go undiagnosed.

In many cases the untreated condition can lead to many symptoms of pain around the face, head, neck, shoulders and down the back. The fact that the jaw joint is the most complex and used joint in your body means that we should be aware of any condition that may be a cause for concern.

Veneers

A veneer is a new front surface for a tooth, custom made from ceramic porcelain. Ceramic veneers can be used in a variety of situations i.e. to align crowded or crooked teeth, close gaps or lighten tooth colour. Their strength and appearance rivals that of natural teeth and they are used to make long lasting changes to the smile. In most cases the Dentist can make and fit veneers in a single visit.

Our dentists are known for their skills in using veneers to make beautiful new smiles. We work with world leading dental technicians including those used for extreme makeover and 10 years younger.
