The Permanent Solution for Tooth Loss

Dental Implants are a tremendously successful mechanism for replacing missing or badly damaged teeth. They are however costly, and also require a specialist dentist called an implantologist or prosthodontist. Particularly because of the costs involved, implants are one of the most commonly sought treatments by Dental Tourists.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is normally a titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw bone to replace the old root. A natural looking crown is then attached to perfectly replicate the missing tooth. Unlike bridgework, implants do not affect the surrounding teeth. Integrated into the jaw, they avoid gum problems and bone loss that can accompany a bridge or dentures.

You might need dental implants if you are missing one or several teeth. Things to watch out for are:

  • Your jaw may not be suited to implants and a bone graft may be required
  • The implantation procedure requires unique skills and there are dramatically different levels of training, everything from a weekend to 3 years. Check to see that your dentist has the necessary qualifications
  • Implants should not be used if your bone growth is not complete
  • If you are smoker or are taking immune-suppressants the success rate for implants decreases

Ask your dentist what there 5 year success rate is – it should be about 95% for the lower jaw and 90% for the upper jaw.

What is the procedure like?

Implants can be placed either at the time of removal of the old tooth or at any time afterwards: the process is quicker if they are placed immediately after removal. Typically this is performed under a local anaesthetic.

The gum and jaw are prepared, creating an opening for the titanium screw. The screw is secured in place and then the gum is stitched over allowing the area to heal. Titanium has unique properties that allow it to integrate naturally with bone.

Over a period of three to six months the titanium and bone merge to form a very strong bed on which a crown or cap can be placed. This period before a final crown is placed can be shortened dramatically if the implant is placed at the time of extraction, to the extent that sometimes a crown can be fitted at the same time as the titanium screw is attached.

What different types exist?

There are about 50 different types of implants and the particular type or brand chosen by your dentist will depend on a variety of factors, including their training, their equipment, their stock, your bone density and the width of your jaw.

There is one other major category of implant, called blade or narrow. These are typically used when the patient’s jaw will not support normal screw-type implants.

There is also an alternative use of the implanted screws that allows dentures to be secured permanently to the jaw, thus preventing any accidental movement and improving their overall function.

The newest technologies also allow for what are called implants in a day or immediate load implants. This technique is very new though, and not very widespread. It is normally recommended to leave between 3 and 6 months between having an implant fitted and placing a crown on it.

What affects the price?

One very important factor in pricing dental implants is that an implant is simply the titanium screw that attaches to the jaw bone. In order for a tooth to be replaced this implant needs a crown. When pricing dental implants, make sure the price includes the price of the required crowns. Things to look out for are:

  • The Dentist selected to perform the procedure
  • The type of implant being used
  • The location of the implant
  • The number of implants
  • The type of crown required
Price Comparison

Price lists should always be viewed with caution as many factors can increase or decrease the resulting price. Here is a rough price comparison based on the average prices for implants around the world:

US $2,650 €2,000 £1,800
UK $3,570 €2,700 £2,450
Hungary $1,420 €1,070 £970
Poland $1,300 €975 £880
Belgium $3,690 €2,790 £2,530
Mexico $1,325 €1,000 £905
Costa Rica $1,190 €900 £815
Thailand $1,790 €1,350 £1,225

Dental implants offer a strong and lasting solution to damaged or missing teeth, and are often the most aesthetically pleasing option too.

Med Asia Dental Clinic

Ground Floor Cablelink Building, 117 West Avenue, Quezon City, 1110
Rating from 20 Reviews Patients should not expect state-of-the art equipment she has something better: intelligence, experAnonymous, Macao SAR, 25 Dec 16

I was rather desperate to find a competent dentist that would treat what I personally suspected was an infection in a molar. My local clinic in Macao made a panoramic x-ray with a very modern & technologically advanced machine. But after charging me for it they then suggested 3 implants which they estimated at a huge cost. I then made a careful web search and luckily found Dr Cecilia Flores of AsiaMed through WhatClinic. She looked at my dental x-rays(all by email) and confirmed my suspicion. I arranged an appointment, I flew to Manila and we finally met at her clinic. The jawbone infection was much larger than I thought; she extracted the molar and cleaned the infection pointing out that at this stage implants would be dangerous. I hope to return when the jawbone has healed completely so she can do one implant and then we shall see about the others. She has a gentle touch and is very efficient. Though her clinic is small and patients should not expect state-of-the art equipment she has something better: intelligence, experience and honesty. Costs are much more reasonable and I am quite happy with the experience.

4th Level, Montivar Building, 34 Jupiter corner Planet Streets, Bel-Air Village, Makati City, 1209
Rating from 24 Reviews Felt very confident using themLaurence, Davao, 02 Nov 15

Had initial appointment for dental transplants. They seem very experienced with this treatment, and I felt very confident deciding to use them instead of another clinic I had previously visited. Will return for the next appointment in several weeks. They are very professional and caring. They explained the procedures in detail, and referred me to an appropriate clinic for CAT scan of the mouth, a necessary detail for this kind of operation. They even had their driver take me there. I look forward to my second appointment in several weeks.

Rating from 23 Reviews I would highly recommend them to anyoneFatima, Philippines, 29 Jul 16

I had done tooth extraction, fillings and oral prophylaxis. Two thumbs-up for them. There's nothing more I can say coz they're sooooo good and professional. My overall experience is indeed really awesome. The staff are so nice, I never felt uncomfortable the whole time I was at the clinic. They are so friendly. Dr.Rose is the best, she explained everything to me and as well as gives me advice. I wouldn't trust any other dental clinic beside them. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I assure you, you will love them and you'll be able to confidently smile again.

Treated me with kindness and care throughout my treatmentFrank, Balamban, 10 Nov 15

I visited this clinic after searching on line for a competent and respected dentist. I needed an annual check up, two fillings and one assessment on a broken crown. I am a nervous patient after having had difficult experiences in the dentist chair on many occasions! I was seen by Dr Rose who is the understudy of Dr Chu. She was understanding about my nervousness and treated me with kindness and care throughout my treatment. She was confident in dealing with 2 fillings, one which was quite large on a rear molar. She gave me anaesthetic which completely numbed the tooth and I became more and more at ease as she completed the treatment. She gave me advice about dealing with a broken crown and she discussed with me the possibly of having modern dentures to replace lost teeth. All together, I was very impressed by her attentiveness and professional skills. Thank you Rose!

Rating from 12 Reviews Very smooth treatment and procedureMeilene, Philippines, 24 Nov 15

Implant: I have heard so many bad stories about dental implants from my friends. But I am tired using my dentures. After having few smooth root canal treatments from Dr. Dacles/ Dente Care, I decided to push through with the dental implant with him. I was scared at first, and even anticipated it would be a very painful procedure. But no, it was a very smooth treatment/procedure. I can even sleep. The Doctor has gentle hands. The treatment went smoothly. I am very very happy and satisfied. The dente care clinic is the best dental clinic I've been to. The dentist is very friendly, patient, knowledgeable and professional. The staff is very accommodating. The clinic is clean too. I had the best root canal treatments and dental implant! Thank you very much.
