What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Could not believe the surgeon, he was brilliantFrank, Ireland, 26 10 23

Just got implant done yesterday. I was terrified as I got 3 in Ireland 15 years ago, never forget the experience, so I was terrified. But could not believe the surgeon, he was brilliant. Six injections, never felt a thing, was finished in 45 mins, could not believe it. I'm now getting 2 more done in 2 weeks, and the price is unbelievable. No Turkey for me, trust me, give them a ring.

Root Canals €399 - €599
Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.  To keep your mouth in tip top shape we recommend you come in for regular hygiene appointments and dental check-ups. Is it painful?Today root canal treatment is as comfortable as getting a filling. With advanced local anaesthesia options and techniques it shouldn’t be painful.  Although pain can be experienced, this is because of the infection in the tooth. Pain isn’t caused by the root canal treatment. I’m not feeling any pain, so I don’t need a root canal treatment.Your dentist will see and advise you if the pulp of your teeth is damaged or infected. If this is the case you will need root canal treatment. You may end up with the teeth needed to be extracted.
Teeth Whitening from €79
Laser Teeth Whitening is the most usual method of tooth whitening. Your dentist will be able to tell you if you are suitable for the treatment. Using a mouthpiece all of your teeth would be exposed to make it easier for the gel and light to work. After this a whitening gel will be applied to your teeth. Then a light or laser is shone on the teeth to activate the chemical. The light speeds up the reaction of the whitening product and the colour change can be achieved more quickly.
Teeth Cleaning with PRSI Free from €90
Your teeth are continually bathed in saliva which contains calcium and other substances which help strengthen and protect the teeth. While this is a good thing, it also means that we tend to get a build-up on the teeth over time. If the tartar is allowed to accumulate on the teeth it will unfortunately provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums. If plaque is allowed to build up, the bacteria in it can cause gum disease, making your gum bleed, sore and infected. The purpose of the cleaning and polishing is to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them and you have a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care. What is a dental hygienic cleaning? Dental hygienic cleaning removes tartar (mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult to reach in routine tooth brushing. The treatment includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing and debridement if too much tartar has accumulated. This involves the use of various instruments or devices to loosen and remove deposits from the teeth. Does it hurt to have your teeth cleaned? Most people find that cleanings are painless and feeling some tickling vibrations, the cooling mist of water, and the feeling of pressure during “scraping” – do not cause discomfort. A lot of patients even report that they enjoy cleanings and the lovely smooth feel of their teeth afterwards. How long does the treatment take? This treatment takes approximately. 20-30 minutes.PRSI Treatment Free no additional cost

Now I have a treatment plan and feel so happy about itMandy, Ireland, 20 04 23

I'm taking the time to do this review because Dr. David Vard is excellent. I'm out of pain, no fuss, no bother, great advice delivered in a calm safe environment. I'll be a regular visitor from now on as the whole team were caring and kind and totally alleviated my fears. Dr. David explained the issue, and how it arose and now I have a treatment plan and feel so happy about it. Thank you. And then went next door to Killiney shopping centre, got what I needed in the chemist and had a coffee in a lovely little coffee shop. Happy days.
