James Hicks was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon to Western Sussex Hospitals Trust in January 2010, working in both St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester and Worthing Hospital. He trained at the Royal London Hospital and then completed his early surgical training at St Richard’s Hospital. After two years of research in urological cancer cell biology he underwent his specialist training in the cancer centers of Portsmouth, Southampton and Bournemouth, where he developed his specialist interests in urological cancer surgery.
He is experienced in laparoscopic kidney and prostate surgery and has completed a laparoscopic fellowship in Leipzig, Germany with Professor Stolzenburg, one of the world leading surgeons and authorities in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. He is well published in the techniques, outcomes and complications of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.
His interests include the management of kidney, bladder and prostate cancers and all aspects of core urological conditions. He is also the clinical lead for the Urology Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT), the clinical lead for governance in St Richard’s Hospital.
James is an honorary consultant in the Sussex urology cancer centers of Brighton University Hospital and Eastbourne General Hospital where he performs the major open and laparoscopic bladder and prostate surgery for West Sussex patients.
James lives Sidlesham with his wife Victoria, a local dentist, and has 3 children.

Suzie Venn was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester in 2000. She trained at the Royal London Hospital, with her urological training being centred in the nationally renowned centres of the Institute of Urology, University College London and Guys Hospital. Here she developed her subspecialty interests in urethral stricture disease and Reconstructive Urology under Professor Mundy. She also trained under Professor Woodhouse in Adolescent and Reconstructive urology, to join the Reconstruction Team at the Institute of Urology as a part time consultant and honorary senior lecturer.
In 2005 Suzie was appointed as a consultant in Portsmouth Hospitals to lead reconstruction and adolescent surgery. Over that time the urethral reconstruction service has further developed to provide sub-specialist care for West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands ETC.
At St Richard’s Hospital, Suzie is the clinical lead for reconstructive surgery, male and female incontinence and paediatric and adolescent surgery.
Suzie Venn is married to Richard, an Anaesthetist and has two sons.

Biography:

Paul Carter trained in Bristol and London, researching male lower urinary tract problems for his MD and later working at King’s College Hospital in the then newly evolving field of Laparoscopic Urology. Having been appointed as Consultant Urological Surgeon to St Richards Hospital, Chichester in 1994, he has subsequently developed a major interest on Urological Oncology.
Paul is currently Integrated Clinical Lead for Urology at the Western Sussex Hospitals trust and continues to promote a multidisciplinary and network approach to Urological cancer management.
Paul introduced Upper Tract Laparoscopy to St Richards Hospital in 2007 for benign and malignant kidney disease and has continued to develop this service to include Laparoscopic Nephrectomy, Nephroureterectomy and Pyeloplasty now as routine laparoscopic procedures.
In summer 2010 he spent 3 months working at the University Hospital of Geneva, exploring the role of the Da Vinci Operating Robot in the laparoscopic surgery of kidney and prostate cancer.

Paul is married to Alison, a local GP and has 4 children.

Philip Britton was appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon to St Richards Hospital in 1992 and was the first urologist to be appointed in Chichester.
Philip qualified in Bristol. He developed his interest in urology whilst working as a Registrar in Leeds and it was there that he did the work for his MD thesis. He was awarded his thesis for research on haematuria (or urinary tract bleeding) and is widely quoted for his work in this field.
He completed his training at Guy’s Hospital in London. It was from there that he took up his post in West Sussex.
Philip is a general urologist with a special interest in prostate problems, problems of the bladder and lower urinary tract, kidney stones, urinary tract bleeding and bladder cancer.
He is well known locally, has a busy clinical practice and is a skilled endoscopic surgeon. He is experienced in the management of urinary tract stones and has developed a local laser service for treating difficult stones in the upper urinary tract.
Philip is also involved with medical management. He was Medical Director of the Royal West Sussex Hospital Trust from 2003-2008 and now continues his medical management interests at the new Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust and the Strategic Health Authority.
His wife is a Consultant Dermatologist in Portsmouth.

Simon Woodhams was born in the UK but grew up in Mombasa, Kenya. He went to Cranleigh School near Guildford and then St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School. He then completed higher surgical training through Guy’s Hospital also working at Winchester, Chertsey, Worthing and Brighton. He was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 2000 and spent a fellowship year in Brisbane, Australia, developing his interests in Urological Cancer Surgery before taking up his Consultant post at Worthing.
Simon is a busy general Urologist with interests in prostate, bladder and kidney problems. He is also a leading local cancer surgeon performing all major pelvic cancer operations on urology patients from the Worthing area and for the last 5 years he has also been operating in the cancer centre at Brighton. He has helped establish the laparoscopic prostatectomy service for across Sussex and is chairman of the Sussex Cancer Network Urology Tumour Group. He has been involved in creating pathways for the management of prostate cancer on a national level.
His other major surgical interest is in laser surgery for benign prostate enlargement where he is in a unique position to be able to offer Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy, Holmium Laser Prostatectomy and HIFU in Prostate Cancer.

Barnaby Chappell qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1997. He completed his higher surgical training in 2009 having spent his senior years at Guys Hospital. During training he undertook international fellowships in America and Belgium. He is trained in all aspects of open and endoscopic urology and has particular interest in laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery, particularly for the management of prostate, renal and bladder cancer. Having been awarded the FRCS Urol in 2008, he has expanded his interests in bladder cancer by researching innovative surgical techniques and imaging modalities to improve staging and treatment.

Tom Liston qualified from The National University of Ireland (NUI) in 1979. He trained in Urology at St Thomas’s Hospital which was leading the world in stone treatment. Here he developed expertise in the surgical management of stone disease including extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy and laser fragmentation of renal tract stones and percutaneous techniques. Tom joined Worthing and Southlands Hospital in 1994 as a Consultant Urological Surgeon. His main interest is in stone disease but as laparoscopy (key hole surgery) expanded in Urology, he developed laparoscopy at Worthing Hospital and now also specialises in upper tract (kidney) laparoscopy. He was awarded his MCh thesis for research on the overactive bladder and he still has a keen interest in this field.
He is married with three children. His wife is a local GP.
