About Willowbrook Centre of Oriental Arts

Today there are many people of all ages and backgrounds suffering from the pain and stress of living in these hectic times. Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Martial Arts and Tuina have been used for centuries in the East to help maintain both mental and physical balance in practitioners.

We offer the opportunity to, take control of one's life, feel more relaxed, get fit, gain improved mental focus and become mentally and physically grounded.

Our instructors will guide you through the Tai Chi and Qi Gong forms or the various Kata and techniques of Traditional Japanese Martial Arts, so that you work and learn at your own rate, slowly building week by week your own expertise in the art.

We also offer Tuina, a medical massage therapy used in hospitals throughout China. Tuina is unique in that it can treat the same diseases as Acupuncture but has the added benefit of also working extremely fast on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body.

Tui Na

Tuina (pronounced twee na) is a form of Chinese manipulative therapy. It is one of the four cornerstones of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the other three being, Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Qi Gong (chi kung).

Tuina is unique in that it can treat the same diseases as Acupuncture but has the added benefit of also working extremely fast on the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the body.

Tuina has been the predominant choice for the Chinese people in their own country when dealing with injury, pain and trauma. Tuina covers all aspects of massage, manipulation and physical therapy. There has been no need for physiotherapy, osteopathy, chiropractic, sports massage in China as Tuina has dealt with all the issues these therapies face.

QiGong
Qi Gong (pronounced chi kung) is one of the four cornerstones of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the other three being, Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs and Tuina (Twee na). Qi Gong is broken into two words, Qi meaning energy and Gong meaning cultivation through work. So Qi Gong means to cultivate energy though work.

Qi Gong practice here at Willowbrook consists of stationary standing postures, moving standing postures and dynamic walking forms. We also practice a Qi Gong form utilizing the tai chi ruler or "bang stick".

The aim of Qi Gong is to promote and strengthen the flow of qi through the body, this is done by synchronising the practitioners intention, breath and movement.

Tai Chi Chuan

Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese system of maintaining good natural health, a sophisticated system of self defense and a way to develop oneself spiritually.

Like nature Tai Chi accomplishes much through little and as such is suitable for all ages and abilities. Everyone can benefit from this gentle exercise, even those with physical disabilities.

As a system of healing the Tai Chi movements help to promote "homeostasis" the natural balance within the human body and as such are a useful aid to deal with the stresses and strains of modern life. Tai Chi healing methods are also taught to any students who wish to study the healing aspects in more depth.

Mr Richard Whitfield

Job Title:
  Practice Therapist
Specialisations:
  Traditional Chinese Medicine
Biography:
Richard has been training in Tai Chi for 11 years and
teaching for 4, he started training by learning Yang style
Tai Chi along with sword and fan forms. Richard is one of
only two people in Ireland qualified to teach Dr Lam’s Tai
Chi for Arthritis program.

In his Tai Chi classes Richard likes to teach Qigong as he
finds that this compliments the Tai Chi, and is great for
people who do not have the space to practice Tai Chi at
home.

After graduating from Tuina Therapy Ireland he set up a
Tuina clinic in Ballaghaderreen Co. Roscommon, where he
works on both his Tai Chi students and members of the
public.

Richard also enjoys practicing Traditional Japanese Martial
Arts, and runs classes for both adults and children from the
local area.

Richard spends his time promoting Tuina, Tai Chi,Qigong
and Traditional Japanese Martial Arts, as he feels people
should be made aware of the many health benefits gained
from practicing these arts.

He gives talks to groups, and attends health fairs around
the country, in the hope that people will gain as much from
these arts as he has.
