About Joanna Sweeney - Psychotherapist
As a systemic psychotherapist I work with individuals, couples, children, teens and various combinations of family members. I take a solution-focused approach which means that, together, we work out what you would like to be different and map out a clear way of getting there. We'll discover what works for you and what builds your resilience when times are challenging.
While my approach is solution-focused, I use therapeutic tools within this. For instance;
- cognitive behavourial (CBT) when people are stuck in cycles of negative thinking or depression
- affect regulation (ART) when we become overwhelmed by intense emotions for example, anger, fear/anxiety, sadness as well as stress / trauma responses
- compassion-focused (CFT) which is an emerging area of practice particularly useful for self-criticism
One key concept for a systemic practitioner is that everything is connected - that all contexts (big or small) contribute to how we experience and respond to the world. It's important then to figure out how these contexts interact in order for things to make sense eg how our work lives influence us and in turn influence how we are in our personal lives - how stressors impact on our mental health and therefore our relationships. As humans, relationships are vital to our overall wellbeing - whether that's at work, at home, at school or in the community.
