5 50 Psychotherapist Consultation

CBH

I had struggled with my stress for more years than I care to remember. I was delighted with the results I experienced from my sessions with Amanda. Friends and family have noticed improvements I have made as well. I found Amanda very easy to talk. She is very knowledgeable in her area. I learned so much about myself and the most important thing for me was the life skills I have learned. I would highly recommend Amanda and intend to recommend her to others in the future.

Why speak to a therapist?

Many people engage in therapy for personal development reasons; in order to reach their potential, achieve goals and gain a clearer perspective.  Therapy has the potential to facilitate insights, developing self-awareness and changes which lead to one gaining a sense of control and fulfillment.

There are also times in life where we may find it difficult to deal with challenges we face, feeling overwhelmed, stuck, confused, worried or fearful.  In today’s modern society many people are under immense pressure.  Pressure may be personal, financial and/or work.  Undeniably, during a time where many work and home environments have become increasingly pressurised from external and internal stressors, people are experiencing a variety of challenges.  As humans when faced with change and uncertainty we are vulnerable to stress, anxiety and low mood.  Therapy can provide one with tools and resources for dealing with challenges, improving how we respond to challenging situations and circumstances.

My role is to listen, support and guide. Adopting a skills training approach, I train my clients in self - help techniques.  I guide clients in techniques which aid one in regaining freedom in thoughts and behaviour, harnessing the potential of the mind.

I place emphasis on educating and empowering.  I ensure clients have a range of tools and resources fundamental for personal development.  Research clearly reveals thatempowering clients to gain control in their lives, results in psychological resilience.

Please note that during consultations and sessions, calls are redirected to voicemail so as not to disturb the client. Please leave a message with your name and number and Amanda will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological therapy. A substantial amount of empirical (scientific) research has investigated CBT, disclosing the significant impact our cognitions (thought processes) have on emotion and the effectiveness of CBT interventions.

At Northwest Therapy and Hypnosis, I take an evidence based approach to therapy combining the two most powerful and effective therapies available in the field of psychology and psychotherapy namely,Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy. This integration referred to as Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH). CBH is the abbreviation used to refer to the incorporating of clinical hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques and strategies. The combination of the most widely researched and most effective therapeutic techniques maximises the therapeutic outcomes.

"Meta-analyses have established that different psychotherapies have different outcomes. Cognitive-behavioural therapies are significantly more effective than psychodynamic therapies, and their superiority increases when long-term follow-up is assessed. Hypnosis enhances the efficacy of both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy". (Kirsch, 1996)

Smoking Cessation Consultation

Amanda Walsh - Northwest Therapy and Hypnosis

"Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit"New Scientist v136

New Scientist in 1992, published findings of a clinical study, which uncovered hypnosis as having the highest success rate, in the cessation of smoking. Research comparing many different forms of intervention including hypnosis in the cessation of smoking revealed that on average smokers are over five times more likely to break the habit of smoking with hypnosis compared to willpower alone. Hypnotherapy in general is found to be more than twice as effective as nicotine gum. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), including nicotine patches or nicotine gum, nasal sprays etc. are some of the most popular methods used by people in an attempt to stop smoking. However, research studies reveal that NRT has a success rate of 7.2%. Compare this with the success rate of will power alone, which is 6%.

Noteworthy to mention that many of the hypnotherapists in the study employed hypnosis alone, often using outdated methods lacking an evidence base. My approach combines hypnosis with cognitive behavioural strategies and interventions, which increases effectiveness further. In other words, these results improve considerably when combining clinical hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy procedures and protocols.

This multi component approach works on many different levels to aim to break the habit, providing you the tools to help you to succeed.

CBH used effectively on a vast range of different issues such as SLEEP DIFFICULTIES, cessation of HABITS (smoking, nail biting etc), FEARS AND PHOBIAS; OPTIMISING PERFORMANCE (e.g. exams, driving test, sports); WEIGHT REDUCTION; building CONFIDENCE and SELF-ESTEEM.

Hypnosis is essentially a cognitive (thought) process. Hypnosis utilises naturally occurring physiological and psychological processes. Hypnosis refers to a systematic process, which in general heightens ones suggestibility, focusing attention on a suggestion, in other words focusing on a thought, sensation, feeling, behaviour or image, ignoring or disregarding possible distractions. Through the guidance of your therapist, you are directed in using the imagination to evoke productive thoughts and emotions.

Notably, Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is a constructive approach, recognising and working on the individuals unique version and perspective on their reality. This reality which the individual has lived with, which has gone unquestioned and has lent itself to psychological distress. The clients processing of information and biases in perception uncovered, monitored, altered to develop more productive, healthy patterns in thinking. This results in one achieving relief from symptoms (e.g. stress, anxiety, fear, panic), freedom from habitual behaviours, developing psychological resilience, well–being and long term gain
