About Karen Dempsey Psychotherapy

Karen Dempsey is a qualified Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapist based in the NCR Clinic, 400 North Circular Rd, Phibsboro, Dublin 7 (next door to the Mater Hospital). She also conducts sessions in the Oscailt Centre, Pembroke Rd D4, and via Skype.

Hi, my name is Karen, and it would be my privilege to work with you through whatever life situation is current for you right now.

I hold an MSc in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy from Dublin City University, which is recognised by the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP), and the Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (IAHIP).

I have a special interest in exploring effective and viable self-care options for people leading busy lives, and I wrote my Master's Thesis on Abbreviated Mindfulness for Junior Doctors. I am currently a Trainee Interfaith Minister through the One Spirit Interfaith Foundation, a Registered General Nurse (Obs & Gynae), and I hold a BA in Irish and English from UCD.

As a person living without hair, I have developed a special interest in the psychology of body image and how it can impact on our psychological health. I am very involved with the International Alopecia Support Community, and my interest in the area of body image extends beyond hair loss to all possible manifestations of body-image disturbance. I believe in the beauty of the individual, regardless of outer manifestations or social norms, and I am committed to working with individuals towards finding and embracing their own individuality, beauty, self-esteem and sense of worth.

I also have a special interest in pre and peri-natal psychology, both for mother and baby. I have a background in Obs & Gynae nursing in the Rotunda Hospital, and have a special interest in working with women in relation to psychosexual issues, issues related to women’s health, and with regard to their expectations and experience of pregnancy and birth. I am also deeply committed to working with parents who have experienced early pregnancy loss, miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death, and individuals experiencing issues with fertility.

I abide by a strict code of ethics outlined by both IACP/IAHIP and An Bord Altranais, and all client interactions take place in the strictest of confidence.

I am also Registered General Nurse, and I hold a BA in Irish and English from UCD. My background in Obs & Gynae nursing in the Rotunda Hospital points to my special interest in working with women in relation to Womanhood- ie psychosexual issues, birth trauma, issues related to health, and with regard to their expectations and experience of pregnancy and birth.
