About Insight Matters - Phibsborough

Insight Matters provides Individual, Relationship and Group Counselling, Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for a wide range of issues.

Psychotherapy and counselling gives you a regular time to think and talk about the issues, which are stopping you from living a happier and fuller life. This is carried out in a confidential, safe and non-judgemental space. It works best when a collaborative relationship is formed between you and your therapist.

When you see a psychotherapist or counsellor you get to learn more about yourself and how your mind and body works and the relationship between your beliefs and thoughts and how you feel and behave.

The aim of the psychotherapy is lasting psychological change, brought about through increased insight. These changes include:

• Becoming more able to feel, identify and express emotions.

• Making connections (e.g. between feelings and behaviours or past and present experiences).

• Gaining a greater understanding of behaviours.

• Developing effective emotional and practical coping strategies.

• Re-evaluating perceptions and past experiences, this often leads us to become more self-accepting.

You and the therapist will explore thoughts, feelings and behaviours that may be causing emotional and physical distress. Together you will discover new healthier ways of coping and letting go of past experiences, enabling you to move forward with your life.

At Insight Matters we are committed to providing services built on the highest ethical standards, care and respect for our clients. By providing quality mental health services, and using the most up-to-date evidence based practices, we help our clients reach their full potential and become more active members of their communities.

Anger Management

Anger Management Counselling & Psychotherapy

Anger, though a natural emotion, may express itself in undesirable ways. Anger and high adrenaline triggers physiological reactions such as raised heart-beat, higher temperature and palpitations. Mounting anger can cause us to behave aggressively and inappropriately which can negatively impact our relationships, both personal and professional. We cannot control anger-provoking situations, but we can manage our attitudes to them.

What is Anger Management Counselling & Psychotherapy?

Anger Management counselling can help with all anger issues from mild irritation to explosive rage. Anger Management sessions can help you to understand the causes of anger and help to set it in context. We work with you to manage your anger levels and to minimize angry confrontation or self-harm. Once a degree of management over your anger has been achieved, we explore its root causes and underlying source.

What are the Benefits of Anger Management Counselling?

•Understanding the root causes of your anger/irritability.

•Examine the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that contribute to anger.

•Gain self-understanding and insight, including identifying triggers.

•Improve your communication skills and self-expression.

•Develop coping strategies to manage anger-provoking situations.

•Learn techniques and tools that are applicable for the long-term.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an evidence-based treatment based on the idea that thoughts, feelings and behaviours are interconnected. The essence of cognitive therapy is to examine underlying thoughts behind the emotional problems and to generate alternative, more balanced thoughts. Cognitive therapists aim to work on your thoughts and behaviours to help improve how you feel.

How many Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sessions do I need?

The number of Cognitive Therapy sessions depends on your presenting issues. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy tends to be short-term. A first consultation will establish how many Cognitive Behavioural Therapy sessions may be indicated.

What evidence is there for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based therapeutic approach and is regarded as a treatment of choice for a number of mental health issues. This is based on numerous studies showing the effectiveness of

OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Treatment

Insight Matters offers treatment for different manifestations of OCD. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), or behaviours that make them feel driven to do something (compulsions). Often the person carries out the behaviours to get rid of the obsessive thoughts, but this only provides temporary relief. Not performing the obsessive rituals can cause great anxiety. There are many types of obsessions and compulsions.

Examples include:

• Checking and rechecking actions (such as turning out the lights and locking the door)

• Excessive counting

• Excessive fear of germs

• The compulsion to repeatedly wash the hands to ward off infection

• Mental Rituals

The person usually recognizes that the behaviour is excessive or unreasonable.

What is Counselling for OCD?

Counselling treatment for ?OCD involves working through a therapy program to control the obsessions and associated rituals. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has been shown to be effective in controlling OCD.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - for OCD Insight Matters offers treatment for different manifestations of OCD. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be the most effective type of psychotherapy for this disorder. The client is exposed many times to a situation that triggers the obsessive thoughts, and learns gradually to tolerate the anxiety and resist the urge to perform the compulsion. Medication and CBT together are considered to be better than either treatment alone at reducing symptoms.

Psychotherapy can also be used to:

• Provide effective ways of reducing stress

• Reduce anxiety

• Resolve inner conflicts

Please call to arrange an initial assessment for your specific issues.

Psychotherapist Consultation

Initial Meeting

This may be your first time entering therapy; here is a list of what we have seen to be true for many people about therapy:

•It takes time to establish a trusting relationship with a therapist.

•It is important to go at your own pace and not overwhelm yourself.

•We all resist change. Don’t be surprised if you are tempted to quit right before some real changes or breakthroughs are about to happen.

•Becoming more healthy and balanced can feel very unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first.

•Therapy is hard work.

•Some therapy is short term (usually focusing on one issue and situation) and other therapy may be longer term (more than one or complex issues.)

•Expect your therapist to hold strong boundaries, be ethical, and treat you with respect.

•Remember that therapy, in the hands of a skilled therapist, is a powerful and life-changing experience. It has been shown to be effective for a variety of difficulties and problems.

If you need therapy and work as an active participant in your own treatment, you can expect it will be well worth the time and money you invest.
