History

The Elmwood Centre, formally known as The Family Therapy and Counselling Centre Ranelagh, was established in 1987 to provide counselling and psychotherapy services to the community. Our Practice moved seven years ago to our beautiful new Counselling and Psychotherapy premises at 32 Lombard Street East, Dublin City Centre. It was established to provide therapy to individuals, couples and families who want to take the first step towards resolving their problems, improving their sense of well-being and developing the confidence to change.

Our Approach

As a team, our approach to our work, both as individuals and as a practice, is Humanistic and Integrative. Humanistic is a term that is used to describe an approach that respects, values and treats the individual as a whole person physically, mentally and emotionally. This approach also holds the belief that people have choice, freedom, responsibility and the capacity to change, heal and grow towards reaching their true potential. Integrative means that we draw creatively from a broad range of therapeutic strategies to help you on that journey. If you would like to speak to one of our therapists in complete confidence

It is our aim to uphold and enhance the professional reputation of the Centre by continuing to work hard to deliver the best service to our clients and our team at Elmwood are committed to providing services built on the highest professional and ethical standards.

Counselling and psychotherapy are essentially about change. Seeking help is the first step towards planning how we would like to be and what we would like to do in order to effect change. Our Therapists provide assistance with personal development, relationship and communication difficulties, bereavement and issues such as depression, panic attacks, anxiety, stress, addiction and abuse.

The Elmwood Centre also provides an exceptional therapy room rental service to suitably like-minded and qualified professionals working in the mental health area. We are committed to ensure that our working conditions are suitable for the practice of psychotherapy by developing and sustaining good working relationships, systems of communication and a supportive environment for all.

CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been the most widely researched therapy. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of therapy that involves addressing a person’s problematic thinking styles and behaviors. It is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behaviour) all interact together. Specifically, our thoughts determine our feelings and our behavior. Therefore, negative thoughts can cause us distress and result in problems.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps people to develop alternative viewpoints in order to tackle their problems. Developing alternative viewpoints is the cornerstone of the CBT principle that there is always more than one way of seeing things and therefore a person chooses their own viewpoint. This type of therapy has been found to be helpful in:

  • Anxiety
  • Panic attack
  • Depression
  • Acrophobia and other phobias
  • Social phobias
  • Bulimia
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • Stress
  • Relationship problems

When we change the way we think for the better, this in turn, contributes to how we view and react to situations around us. It also helps to bring new clarity of thought to help make better decisions for ourselves and others.

Couples Therapy

What is Marriage & Relationship Counselling?

Relationships can run into difficulties from time to time resulting in conflict, lack of communication and disappointment. Normal life stage events such as the birth of a new baby, redundancy, retirement, a change in work/life balance or children leaving home can also present couples with the challenge of renegotiating their expectations of themselves and each other. Counselling can teach you some valuable ways to improve and enhance communication skills and to work through difficult emotions to achieve clarity, understanding and connection.

Elmwood Centre offers relationship counselling in a safe and comfortable environment to co-habiting, married and same sex couples. We provide the space for couples to talk, listen and be heard. By working with a counsellor who possesses empathy and professional expertise, couples feel supported while working through the challenges in their intimate relationship. While being aware of the uniqueness of each individual, we also have the skills and experience to hear both sides of the story in complete confidence, without judgement and without taking sides.

The relationship you wish to explore may be past, present or in the future, and we invite you, alone or with your partner, to avail of the opportunity to explore, understand and transform your relationships.

Student Counselling

What is Student Counselling & College Services?

At Elmwood Centre we offer counselling and psychotherapy to students from colleges and universities. We recognise that whilst the college experience can be exciting and rewarding, it can also be challenging for many students. The transition from school to college can be difficult to negotiate and sometimes personal or family problems can interfere with a student’s academic and social life. We help and support students to manage difficulties so that college life can be enjoyed and participated in more fully. We have a lot of experience working with and providing support services to students who are struggling with issues such as;

  • Stress at exam time
  • Difficulties with study
  • Low self-esteem and lack of confidence
  • Social difficulties
  • Cultural differences
  • Adjusting to a co-educational environment
  • Relationship issues
  • Gender and Identity issues

Individual Psychotherapy

Personal therapy is a way in which an individual can address any issue in their lives that is causing them distress.
Each person, in their own unique way, has the potential to overcome their present difficulties. Working regularly with a trained therapist in a safe and non judgmental environment can provide a setting in which someone  can engage constructively with their struggle and discover a more creative way of living with less emotional baggage to hold them back.
