Thomas Mitchell

Biography:

Thomas Mitchell qualified as Physiotherapist in 1998 from the University of Nottingham, where he also completed his acupuncture training. After four years broad-based NHS experience he took up position at Sheffield United Football club 2002, where he was responsible for the Academy and reserve teams until 2005 leaving to to undertake further study and work as a Private Practitioner at George Chia’s Clinic.

He completed an MSc in Sports Injury (2006, University of Sheffield) and became Head Physiotherapist for GB Wheelchair Rugby (a position he still holds), staffing Paralympic games and World and European Championship competitions. In 2007 Thomas relocated to Eastbourne to work as a clinician with the Head Medical officer of the British Paralympic Association, Dr Nick Webborn.

After the Beijing Paralympics, Thomas Mitchell moved to London to work with the military at DMRC Headley Court, and in 2010, returned to Sheffield and to acquire George Chia’s clinic.

Biography:

Rob grew up in New Zealand where he first studied for a Physical Education degree and went on to complete a Diploma of Teaching to qualify as a Physical Education secondary school teacher.

After extensive world travel he then studied at Nottingham University and graduated with a 1st class honours Physiotherapy degree in 1995. His first job was in the NHS, spending two years in musculoskeletal outpatients and orthopaedic inpatients. He has been in private practice since and has notably worked at the Northern General Sports Injury Clinic and latterly at The Sheffield Centre of Sports Medicine.

During his five years at The Sheffield Centre of Sports Medicine where he worked closely with the resident Professor of Sports Medicine, he was granted a Honorary Lectureship at the University of Sheffield and lectured physiotherapists, sports scientists and doctors on the MSc Sports Medicine course.

Sarah Leighton

Biography:

Sarah Leighton is the Neurological Specialist within the practice.

After graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 1997 she started working as a physiotherapist at the Northern General Hospital before becoming a senior on the Stroke Unit in 1999. She continued with her interest and enthusiasm in neurological physiotherapy and became a senior on the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries & Neurorehabilitation Centre in 2000 where she now works as a specialist. Through her experiences here she developed a crucial role within paralympic sport in becoming an international classifier for Wheelchair Rugby. She has been recognised by the International Federation as one of the senior classifiers for this dynamic sport and is now the head of classification for the European Zone. After attending the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 her ambition is to remain involved and to be part of the London 2012 Paralympics.

Throughout her career Sarah has continued to study at a postgraduate level to further her knowledge in the area of neurological physiotherapy. She has completed several MSc modules and is also trained in the Bobath Concept. Sarah has also organised and hosted courses at her current place of work.
