About Deal Physiotherapy Clinic

At this time the clinic has one full-time physiotherapist: who commenced physiotherapy training in 1997. Since this time experience has been gained in hospital environments, rotating between neurology, orthopaedics, respiratory and musculoskeletal medicine, the Ministry of Defence, Her Majesty's Prison Service as well as working for a national sports team, consequently gaining an all-round, detailed knowledge of a number of conditions and their treatment.

The clinic maintains a continual professional development (CPD) portfolio, updated via attendance on courses, self-learning and examination. He is knowledgeable regards current research in a wide range of areas concerning musculoskeletal therapy: whether you're young or old, involved in sports or  simply have an injury of unknown cause: our anatomy has not changed much in a million years: we can be of help!

Our treatment concept uses biomechanics: our bodies have mechanical properties based upon physical properties however we are human(!): a holistic approach is valuable; you will not be treated as a machine! Consequently, assessment involves a methodical approach to history taking, screening and questioning followed by systematically testing structures to gain a diagnosis for which treatment is provided.

Treatment can take the form of:

Manual therapy:
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Joint manipulation
  • Ultrasound
  • Muscle stimulation
  • Extracorporeal shockwave treatment
  • TENS machines
  • Traction
Exercise Therapy:
  • Range of movement
  • Strengthening
  • Stretching
  • Sports-specific progressive tendon/muscle loading
  • Exercise avoidance: Knowing when not to do something is often more important than what to do!

  • Workplace advice
  • Manual handling
  • Workplace progression

We have worked within and been involved in the management of community rehabilitation teams although our passion and specialism is musculoskeletal medicine (AKA out-patient physiotherapy/sports physiotherapy). The team lead has worked as a principal physiotherapist within a large Ministry of Defence establishment, leading rehabilitation services; working within private clinics and within the British Age Group Triathlon Team at the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Madeira, 2004.
The principal is an expert as an extended scope physiotherapist (ESP) where he performed clinics within community settings, GP surgeries and prisons. The latter role involved providing:

  • Advice to other physiotherapists in orthopaedic physiotherapy management of patients for whom prior treatment and management had failed
  • Orthopaedic screening i.e. filtering patients toward or away from surgical services: justifying decision making based upon subjective, clinical and radiographic findings
  • Osteoarthritis injections to  all peripheral joints alongside various soft tissues including:
    • Shoulder: to the glenohumeral and acromioclavicular (ACJ)  joints, subacromial space, as well as various tendons of the rotator cuff and long head of biceps
    • Elbow: the elbow joint as well as tennis and golfer's elbow
    • Wrist: Wrist joint e.g. osteoarthritis and the carpal tunnel for carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Thumb: Osteoarthritis of the 1st carpo-metacarpal joint (also known as the trapeziometacarpal joint or the carbo-metacarpal joint of the thumb) and trigger thumb
    • Fingers: osteoarthritis of the small finger joints and trigger finger
    • Hip: Greater trochanteric bursitis and gluteal tendonopathy
    • Knee: Osteoarthritis and knee bursitis (various sites)
    • Ankle: Osteoarthritis
    • Foot: plantarfascitis, osteoarthritis
    • Toes: osteoarthritis
We are adept in clarifying x-ray, Ultrasound, CT and MRI scan reports (amongst others), placing often difficult terminology into clear, easily understood language and, as necessary, 'triangulating' the report in the context of what you, the patient says is wrong with you and with clinical testing of tissues.
