Pregnancy Massage

As we all know, a woman’s body changes dramatically during pregnancy, although your mindset should not. You can still enjoy all the benefits of remedial therapy even while sharing your body with a baby.

Massage can be a very effective way of keeping in touch with your feminine side, especially while your body is constantly adapting, it can also release stress and tension that comes with the pressures of being a new mum and can be a modernistic approach to help bond with your baby and further help you understand your body. Pregnancy massage can reduce aches and pains, give you some ‘you’ time, help you explore the feelings of pregnancy further, help to relax, remove swelling and fluid from the legs known as Oedema, increase mobility and improve postural awareness.

Obviously during pregnancy there are certain considerations which need to be made to allow the safe administration of pregnancy massage. Most are conducted on a seated massage chair to prevent added pressure being emplaced on the baby unless the therapist has a traditional plinth solely for pregnancy massage which includes a hole in the bed; this allows the client to remain more comfortable through her treatment. Most pregnancy massages are completed fully clothed via soft tissue release or friction techniques or with strappy tops being worn so a small amount of oil can be used around the upper back and neck. Treatments are usually conducted towards neck, upper back, shoulders, lower back and feet. Though if there is a specific area you wish to be treated or excess time to be spent on then, have no hesitation in asking.

Certain oils cannot be used as they are absorbed by the body as they increase the lymphatic and circulatory system and metabolism can also be increased. CSSMART uses Pure Touch Organics by Biotone during pregnancy massages as it is a completely organic mixture with only a small number of ingredients.

Swedish Massage

This is a softer alternative treatment to sports massage, using many of the same strokes as sports massage, though treatment can be slower and more relaxing.

Remedial massage has been used for thousands of years and is a proven way of treating the majority of lifes general aches and pains as these can often be labelled as soft tissue conditions. By manipulating the soft tissues the bodys natural healing process can be kick started allowing benefits such as improved circulation, removal of waste products, nerve sedation or stimulation, increased or decreased muscle tone, relaxing and lengthening muscles as well as remodelling scar tissue.

Many people will leave all these aches and pains untreated, believing that they will disappear in their own time, although they each have the potential to develop into more serious issues.

Sciatica Treatment

One of the most well known conditions, this is where pain in the lower region of the back radiates down one of the legs.

Coughing, sneezing and straining can trigger a pain response. It is caused by pressure being emplaced on the nerve roots, usually by the tight structures in the lower back, trapping or straining the nerve roots or a ‘slipped disk’ which also causes a great deal of pressure.

The location for pain occurring usually happens at L4, L5 or S1 as the root nerve is situated there between the vertebrae. If the condition is deemed to be a cause of a slipped disk a CT or MRI scan would better confirm this, although in most cases massage will help loosen off the structures as well as incorporating traction and interferential treatment for nerve stimulation.

It would also be beneficial to complete a full posture analysis for this condition as it easily allows change to be monitored along with the initial findings

Sports Injury Rehabilitation - Strapping and Taping

Strapping and Taping can be used as a way of managing a specific problem or injury and can be applied over numerous locations across the body. Depending on the specific problem either kinesiology or joint supporting methods can be applied. Each practitioner may slightly vary the taping method but ultimately they are very similar processes. CSSMART will conduct an assessment on the problem to make sure that a taping method will actually benefit the problem and that it will not hamper range of movement or strength, but in fact reinforces it to prevent pain or weakness.

Kinesiology taping methods enhance the body’s natural healing processes, through increasing the circulation and neurological systems. It works by lifting the skin away from the soft tissues underneath; this lifting is what promotes increased blood flow and lymph drainage, CSSMART uses Rocktape, as it provides a greater amount of stretch on application and also provides a smoother finish meaning the tape lasts longer once applied.

If you apply kinesiology tape to a specific muscle group you can reduce the amount of stress the muscle is put under, in turn lactic acid can be removed by having increased circulation which can provide increased endurance and aid recovery.

Other methods of taping can be used around joints to provide greater amounts of stability. Though this will provide a huge amount of support it will not stop the client from feeling the injury or lack of stability when competing. Recently CSSMART has been helping Firstaid4sport produce a mobile phone application for strapping and taping. The videos can be seen on our YouTube channel or downloaded on the free application.

Sports Therapy

What is Sports Therapy? It is a specific area within massage and is undertaken by manipulating the bodies soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia to correct imbalances caused by everyday life, physical activity or trauma. Sports Therapy can aid your body physically, physiologically or psychologically which enable benefits to the client such as; increased muscle conditioning, improved athletic performance, enhanced recovery, preventing or treating injuries.

How does the body work? Each movement we make places stress on the body. Our bodies mainly function very intelligently by making choices towards which muscles we select to perform certain movements; therefore the fastest, easiest, least stressed responses are chosen.
When these movements become frequently repeated, the same muscles are used and they can quickly become fatigued.
To allow the same movement response to occur even though the agonist muscles are fatigued, other muscles which either stabilise or perform other movements are called upon to produce the desired movement. Often when the antagonist and synergist muscles produce this movement they also become fatigued but at a much quicker rate as they aren’t meant to provide that movement. When this occurs, aches and pains can arise.
75% of all pain responses relate to the scenario above as the person cannot complete the task required via the best possible muscle response.
This can usually be attributed to a person’s lifestyle choices such as their sports/hobbies or jobs altering their posture through a constant routine of certain movements.
Sports Therapy therefore combats this process by manipulating the bodies soft tissues, which stimulates a release of tension in the tissues, removal of waste products, reduced muscle soreness, improved posture and postural awareness, improved flexibility, removal of scar tissue, it also stimulates the body’s natural recovery process and improves the education of the c

Tennis Elbow

This injury occurs when hyperextension is completed at the elbow when performing movements as part of a sport or exercise.

It can cause further problems by catching on the surrounding structures such as tricep tendinosis. In some cases osteophytes can form because of the movement and the force at the elbow joint.

Treatment is usually based around massage and physiotherapy if there is no need for surgery. Massage of the upper arm and strengthening of the forearm is usually the best possible treatment. An elbow guard should be worn if activity is still taking place, as this will limit the amount of movement at the elbow joint.

Other treatments which may be successful include shockwave therapy or acupuncture, but there is lack of evidence to support these two methods.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy is a form of treatment whereby the therapist works into a specific area to help reduce pain or tension. A trigger point is the tender spot, located within a taut band of muscle fibres which are constantly contracted. This causes pain around the area or referred, it may also have a twitch response in the muscle. By placing pressure onto specific points where trigger points are located and providing small movements the contracted fibres can be released. It is also an effective treatment of flushing waste products out of a muscle. Another by-product of trigger point therapy is a heat response felt directly under where pressure is placed, as well as referring heat to a different place.

Whiplash

Stereotypically this condition is commonly to occur after a car accident.

It forms after a trauma injury to the cervical spine located towards the back of the neck, with pain caused by the neck being extended and then flexed at high speed. When the condition has occurred pain is often felt directly in the cervical region of the spine when the patient is sedentary as well as moving.
Secondly the pain may also radiate down the upper extremities resulting in a loss of feeling in the arms, the pain in the neck may also mask the responsiveness to touch the posterior aspect of the neck below the injury and severe cases may cause muscle weakness or paralysis.

Anyone suspecting whiplash should seek medical attention immediately to have an x-ray before any further treatment is administered, as ligament, bone and muscle injuries may have occurred through the impact.
After this massage and stretching will benefit the condition if there is no further damage found.

Acupuncturist Consultation
Medical acupuncture is a modern adaptation of the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture.
It is defined as a therapeutic technique that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific trigger points across the body to encourage the taught muscle to lengthen and therefore decrease pain.
It has been found that Medical Acupuncture has been extremely successful when treating a number of common musculoskeletal conditions.
