4.5 50 Cataract Surgery

I recently had 2 cataract operations at Optegra Eye Hospital at Whiteley. These were both successful and the care and attention was first class. All the staff were very caring and put me at ease. The procedure was carried out on time and all went very smoothly. I would thoroughly recommend this clinic.

LASEK

At Optegra we use the most advanced equipment for Laser Eye Surgery. All laser treatments involve the use of a laser to change the shape of your cornea and alter your eye’s focusing power. Making the procedure safer and more accurate with better results, and completely blade free for a faster recovery.

LASEK (laser-assisted epithelial keratomileusis) is a surface treatment that avoids the need to create a corneal flap. The total treatment takes around 10 minutes per eye.

It works by softening the thin upper layer of the cornea (1), called the epithelium, before moving it aside (3). An excimer laser (4) is then applied to the exposed tissue before the thin layer is put back in its original position (5). A special contact lens is then applied to protect the epithelium while it heals (6).

Every individual is different. You will need to have a consultation with one of our consultant surgeons who will conduct an in-depth assessment to determine your suitability and tailor an individual solution to you.

LASEK is suitable for people with:

  • less serious eye focusing problems
  • this corneas
  • dry eye
  • Unable to have LASIK

LASIK

At Optegra we use the most advanced equipment for Laser Eye Surgery. All laser treatments involve the use of a laser to change the shape of your cornea and alter your eye’s focusing power. Making the procedure safer and more accurate with better results, and completely blade free for a faster recovery.

LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is the most common laser treatment performed worldwide and is usually a two-stage procedure. It takes around 10 minutes to treat each eye.

Once your eye has been anaesthetised, a femtosecond laser is used to create an extremely thin flap on your cornea (1). By using a laser instead of a blade, the flap can be created with greater precision and with minimal pain. The tissue under the flap is then reshaped using an excimer laser (2) before the flap is carefully placed back again (3).

Every individual is different. You will need to have a consultation with one of our consultant surgeons who will conduct an in-depth assessment to determine your suitability and tailor an individual solution to you.

LASIK is usually suitable for people with:

  • Myopia (short-sightedness)

  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)

  • Astigmatism (irregular- shaped cornea)

Cataract Treatment

Consultation - £225

The natural clouding of the lens, known as a cataract, causes problems with vision, contrast and glare. Using state-of-the-art laser and advanced IOL technology, cataracts can be removed with greater ease and replaced with IOLs that provide the best possible vision for your lifestyle needs.

The procedure requires you to attend the hospital for the day and is performed under local anaesthetic. Taking approximately 20 minutes: the cataract is removed by a technique called Phacoemulsification (ultrasound). The surgeon makes a small incision in your eye (2), softens the lens (3) and removes it through a small tube (4). An Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) customised from your eye is inserted to the replace the cataract lens that has been removed (5). At the end of your procedure a clear plastic shield may be placed over your eye to protect it.

RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange

If you have symptoms of age-related presbyopia, then laser eye surgery will not be suitable for you, but the most effective and permanent alternative solution is to have your natural lens replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL). The availability of new premium IOLs allows your consultant to offer you the chance to see at all distances.

Clarivu™ is the Optegra brand name for its individually tailored, consultant-led vision correction (or Refractive Lens Exchange – RLE) package.

Clarivu is a proven and permanent lens replacement procedure that could eliminate or reduce your dependence on glasses as well as prevent or remove cataracts. The package includes: all diagnostic eye assessments, an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) specially selected for your lifestyle and visual goals, the procedure undertaken in an Optegra eye hospital and post-operative care.

Optegra eye hospital and post-operative care. In addition, the Clarivu package includes any further top-up laser surgery that may be required in order to meet your stated visual goals. The Clarivu package means you pay one single price for the consultation, procedure, lenses and aftercare –no matter what your prescription.

Refractive Lens Exchange is usually suitable for people:

  • Dependence on bifocal, varifocal or multifocal contact lenses or glasses
  • Myopia (short – sightedness)
  • Hyperopia (long-sightedness)
  • Presbyopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Cataracts
