FAMS (Urology), FICS (USA), FRCS (Edinburgh), M Med (Surgery), MBBS (S’pore) Dr Michael Wong is a Senior Consultant Urologist who is internationally recognized for his surgical expertise and academic contribution to the field of Urology, in particular the subspecialized field of minimally invasive Endourology. Currently, he is the Medical Director and Senior Consultant of the Urology, Fertility and Gynaecology Centre at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital, as well as President of Singapore Urological Association from 2009 to 2012. Prior to this, he was: - Director, SGH Urology Centre - Director, SGH Specialist Practice at Gleneagles Hospital - Director, Endourology and Stone Disease - Director, Female Urology and Urodynamics - Director, SGH Regional Endourology Fellowship Programme Dr Michael Wong’s expertise and generous efforts to promote Endourology led to his election to the Board of Directors of the prestigious International Society of Endourology in 2006 which is based in USA. He is the only urologist from ASEAN to sit with the other world opinion leaders and experts in Urology. This is the highest peer recognition one can achieve. He is also the only urologist from ASIA to be appointed Co-Chairman of the WHO 2nd International Consultation in Stone Diseases held in Paris. This consultative committee of urology experts meets about every 5 years to discuss and map out the guidelines and direction for the rest of the world’s urologists in their management of kidney stone diseases. This appointment recognises that Michael is a world leader. In 2015, he was appointed as deputy director of Asia School as urology (ASU) to oversee ASU urological training programme in Southeast Asia, Indochina, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. This is in recognition of Michael's standing amongst his peers. Dr Michael Wong is the Founder President of the Asian Society of Endourology which started in 1998. This network of eminent Asian urologist made it their mission to impart their skills and expertise to junior members. His contribution to urology to the region especially impressed Thailand and Japan. In 2006, the Thailand Urological Association conferred him the title of Life Honorary Member, the only Singaporean thus recognized. In 2003, he was made the Life Member of the Japanese Endourology & ESWL Society. Michael has been elected by his peers to be President of the Singapore Urological Association from 2009 to 2012. This is the body that represents all Urologists (both academic & private) in the whole of Singapore. From within Asia, many urologists have learnt from his vast experience and training. Dr Michael Wong is the Founder and the Chief Trainer for the Singapore General Hospital Regional Endourology Fellowship Programme. Since 1998, even established urologists, including those from as far as Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Pakistan, China and Indonesia, have come to Singapore to learn the minimally invasive techniques of Endocology & Female Urology in particluar Percutaneous NephroLithotomy (PCNL). To see how he is able to creatively manipulate the endoscope to remove large stones embedded in the kidney completely in more than 98% of the time, via a mere 0.5 cm cut in the skin. Traditionally, large stones are removed manually by making a large incision over the skin and splitting open the kidney. Recovery is thus slower and more painful. He has also traveled extensively to share his surgical skills and teach in surgical live-demonstrations and workshops in many countries such as USA, Germany, Italy, Holland, Scotland, Mexico, South Africa, Canada, Australia, England, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Taiwan, Nepal, Brunei and China. In 1993, after completing his post-graduate Fellowship in General Surgery from Edinburgh and Singapore, Dr Wong left for the USA for one year to become the first Singaporean Urologist to obtain an American Fellowship in Endourology and Urolithiasis at the Institute of Kidney Stone Disease in Indiana. Dr Michael worked with the highly acclaimed Dr James E Lingemann, who remains his mentor and friend. Dr Michael Wong was inspired to continue training in America in a completely different subspeciality and obtained a Fellowship in Female Urology and Neurourology at the Methodist Hospital, Indiana, another Singaporean first. He worked with Dr Peter Knapp who invented the Vaginal Wall Sling to cure urinary incontinence in women with abnormal urethral function. Dr Michael Wong specializes in the complex surgical treatment of urinary incontinence which have failed previous surgical treatments and the repair of bladder-vaginal fistula which are usually complications of previous operations. He co-founded the Asian Society of Female Urology in 1998 with his fellow urologists and gynaecologists. He was the founder Secretary General. In 2000, Dr Michael Wong set up a joint service, The Male Fertility Clinic, with Dr Julianah Abu from the Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology at the Singapore General Hospital. This clinical service enabled couples to have their treatment managed together at the same time, especially benefited couples with a male cause for infertility as otherwise, the diagnosis is usually delayed because the male partner is rarely consulted and examined until much later. This unique team of tackling both female & male fertility issues simultaneously has lead to invitations to regional centres in the region. When the Robotic-assisted laparoscopic machine became available in Singapore, Dr Michael Wong was the first to undertake a residency programme in Robotic Urologic Surgery in 2004 at the University of Irvine, California, USA, to perform procedures such as radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Dr Michael Wong is currently a senior transplant surgeon of the Singapore Kidney Transplant Surgical Team Ministry of Health, since 1991. He is accredited by the Ministry of Health to perform kidney transplantation since 1996. Dr Michael Wong’s international academic contribution is equally impressive. In 2013, he was appointed Associate Editor at the Prestigious British Journal of Urology International (BJUI) knowledge. He is also served as an editorial and committee member of the Journal of Endourology, the world’s biggest subscribed academic reference journal for Endourology. Many of the world’s best research on Endourology are published in this journal. Dr Wong also sits on the International Scientific Committee of the World Congress of Endourology for the most part since 2001. He has published more than 78 scientific papers in peer reviewed journals, written 5 chapters in books on urology, is editor of 4 urology books and delivered more than 150 international lectures worldwide. He was also elected in 2009 into the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Urology based in Japan. He has certainly made Singapore’s presence felt in the international arena.Dr Michael Wong’s energetic leadership and achievements extends beyond Urology. He is equally talented and passionate about his role as a hospital management consultant. MBBS (S’pore), MMED (O&G), MRACOG (Aust), MRCOG (London), MCE (IVF) (S’pore), FAM (S’pore) Julianah is a prominent Malay Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Singapore. She is well known for her efforts to educate the public regarding women’s health, in particular their reproductive health, via her numerous public forums, television appearances and radio programmes. She has also been featured frequently in the daily newspapers and magazines. She is not only known for her personable and warm personality. She is the recipient of many scholastic awards through the years. She has scholarships from the Ministry of Education and the Public Service Commission; and awards such as the Prime Minister Book Prize and Mendaki Student Award. She completed her medical studies at the National University of Singapore in July 1990 and went on to train for a post-graduate specialist degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from Australia (MRACOG) and Singapore (M.Med O&G) in 1996. As proof to herself that she is of international standing, she obtained her 4th degree from London (MRCOG) in 1997. Julianah was a research associate at the Cryobiology Research Institute at the Methodist Hospital of Indiana, USA in (1994 - 1995) where her subspecialty training in clinical embryology and assisted reproduction was nurtured. She was also conferred another scholarship from the Singapore General Hospital to pursue her 5th degree, the Masters in Clinical Embryology from the National University of Singapore in 2000. She is one of a rare few specialists who has this degree which focuses on the study of embryology and the laboratory in IVF. She is one of a small number of specialist gynaecologist in Singapore who is accredited by the Ministry of Health (Singapore) to perform assisted reproductive procedures such as IVF for infertile couples. She was a consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the Centre of Assisted Reproduction (CARE) in Singapore General Hospital before she left for private practice in 2004. While in SGH, she developed her interest in Male Fertility as well and went on to set up a joint Gynaecology-Urology Male Fertility Service which enabled the male partner to benefit from an earlier assessment and a more comprehensive joint gynae-urology treatment of their male fertility problem at the same time that their female partner is being assessed. Julianah was also in charge of the Sperm Bank at the Singapore General Hospital and was instrumental in encouraging generous donors to revive the declining supplies. She encouraged autologous sperm banking by promoting this service to her oncologist colleagues to refer their male patients to store their sperm prior to chemotherapy. In 2007, Dr Julianah was invited to be the leading IVF consultant at the premier Jerudong Medical Centre in Brunei where she had the privilege of working with the Brunei Hospital consultants and doctors to revive the IVF services. The IVF services have since grown due to the successful collaboration. Julianah has additional interest in the management of the menopause and their long-term sequelae such as urinary stress incontinence,vaginal laxity and uterine prolapse.
