Dr Zena Lim

Job Title:
  Eye Surgery, Ophthalmology, Paediatric Surgery
  English, Chinese, Cantonese, Malay/Indonesian, Mandarin

Areas of Expertise

Dr Zena Lim is a US fellowship-trained Consultant Ophthalmologist and Adult & Paediatric Eye Surgeon.

Her inspiration to take up the field of ophthalmology stems from two things: her motivation to lead people out of the frightening situation of potential vision loss and her fascination for the mechanisms of the eye's delicate features.

With over 15 years of experience, Dr Zena Lim currently serves as the Medical Director of the Focal Eye Centre and Co-Director of The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre. In the field of ophthalmology, she's especially interested in customized small-incision cataract surgery; and squint (eye misalignment) surgery for adults and children, as, according to her, it not only therapeutically corrects eye alignment among other benefits, but also tremendously improves one's self-esteem and psychological well-being.

Her other areas of expertise include glaucoma lasers and surgery, droopy eyelid/inturned eyelid correction, surgical correction of tearing (syringing and probing of nasolacrimal duct), retinal lasers and injections for various retinal problems, and all aspects of paediatric ophthalmology.

Education, Training and Career Highlights

Dr Zena Lim embarked on her medical training with the National University of Singapore in 1995, followed by residency training in Ophthalmology. This subsequently led to Fellowship accreditation in Ophthalmology by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. In 2004, she was awarded the “Gold Medal in Ophthalmology” for being the top candidate in the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) examinations. In 2004-2005, she trained under the tutelage of Prof Alex Levin, a leader in the field of paediatric glaucoma, cataract and shaken baby syndrome at the renowned Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada. Upon completion of a year of fellowship training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus with the Singapore National Eye Centre, she was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship by the Ministry of Health to pursue further subspecialty training in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the Duke University Eye Centre, USA. There, she honed her skills working with Professor Edward Buckley, an international leader in the fields of complex adult and paediatric strabismus, paediatric cataract and paediatric neuro-ophthalmology; and Professor Sharon Freedman, international leader in paediatric glaucoma. Dr Zena Lim has presented and lectured at numerous international, regional and local conferences, and is first author of many peer-reviewed indexed medical journals. In 2010, she was awarded “Best of the Anterior Segment Specialty Meetings” at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Meeting in 2010 for her work in paediatric cataract.

Giving Back to the Next Generation

Besides her passion for clinical practice, Dr Zena Lim believes in the importance of training the next generation of ophthalmologists. As a Core Faculty member of the Ophthalmology Residency Program at the Singapore National Eye Centre, she was actively involved in curriculum planning, residency teaching and cataract surgery training. She also served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and was part of the Clinical Faculty Scheme at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore.

Previously a consultant with the “Cataract & Comprehensive” and “Paediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus” Services at the Singapore National Eye Centre, she is currently Visiting Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital where her main role is imparting clinical and surgical skills to young aspiring ophthalmologists.

Dr Dawn Teo

Dr Dawn received her Medical Degree from the National University of Singapore in 2000 and went on to complete her Specialist training in Singapore, where she graduated top of her cohort and was awarded the Academy of Medicine Gold Medal for Otolaryngology. After her specialist training, she was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program fellowship and went on to pursue a clinical fellowship in Paediatric Otolaryngology in Children’s Medical Center at University of Texas Medical Center in Dallas, USA. She is an active member in the ENT community where she has been appointed honorary secretary of the Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Dr Dawn also has a passion for teaching and believes in molding the future generation of doctors. She remains an active teaching faculty for the Singhealth Residency program, and was recently awarded the outstanding faculty award. Over the course of her career, Dr Dawn has been featured as an invited speaker at numerous local, regional and international conferences. She has also published widely in multiple international journals and books chapters. Dr Dawn Teo’s subspecialty interests include snoring and sleep disordered breathing in children, airway problems, sinus conditions, allergies, hearing problems and salivary gland diseases in children.
