Dr Sonya Bennett

Biography:
Sonya trained as a medical doctor at Otago University, and then moved up the country to train as an ophthalmologist in Auckland and Hamilton. After this was completed, she worked in Melbourne at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, and in London at Moorfields Eye Hospital gaining expertise in glaucoma care. She returned to New Zealand in 2006 and is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Greenlane Clinical Centre Eye Clinic and a Senior Clinical Lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Auckland. She was a founding director of City Eye Specialists in 2007. Sonya has had a research interest in the genetics of glaucoma and has published in peer reviewed journals. She is an examiner for the Royal New Zealand and Australian College of Ophthalmologists in ocular pharmacology. Her particular areas of clinical interest are angle closure glaucoma, uveitic glaucoma, paediatric glaucoma, glaucoma drainage surgery, and she is an experienced cataract surgeon.

Dr Richard Hart

Biography:
Dr Richard Hart is an ophthalmologist practising at City Eye Specialists and Oasis Surgical. Born and raised in London, Richard moved to New Zealand with his family as a child. After qualifying as a doctor he trained as an ophthalmologist in Auckland. Later, he returned to London for subspecialist training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. Since 2005, Richard has been a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Greenlane Clinical Centre. He has published articles and textbook chapters in ophthalmic journals/books and is a regular presenter at national and international meetings. He represents New Zealand Fellows’ continuing professional development interests on the CPD committee of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. An experienced cataract surgeon, Richard’s professional interests also include oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery.

Biography:
Originally from India, Monika completed her training in medicine and postgraduate studies in ophthalmology with the University of Mumbai and the prestigious King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, which is the largest public tertiary referral centre in Western India. After moving to the UK, she underwent further training in ophthalmology and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London. Subsequently, she relocated to Auckland and undertook subspecialist fellowship training in ocular genetics, medical retina and uveitis. Monika has an exceptional academic background, obtaining gold medals in several ophthalmic examinations, including the MRCOphth exams in London and the Diploma exams in India. She has published in several international journals and been involved in research projects investigating various aspects of inherited eye disorders and diabetic retinopathy. She is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Manukau Superclinic and an honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer with the University of Auckland, through which she maintains her research interests in addition to her clinical work. Apart from being experienced in cataract surgery, Monika’s areas of expertise are medical retinal disorders, particularly macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, genetics of inherited retinal disorders and uveitic eye diseases.
