Today marks the third month after the maxillofacial surgery done on my son, by Doctor Frederick Mars B. Untalan.
At 7:00 pm on Sunday 22 October 2017, I was presented the CT Scan of my son's face. Right away it was determined that the only solution to this was a major facial bone restructuring (in my own understanding) that will need titanium implants to hold the shattered bones together.
Dr. Frederick Mars Untalan, the head of the ENT department of Baguio General Hospital, decided to do the surgery the next day upon the arrival of the metal plates and screws from Manila with a word of encouragement that my son will be home on Friday, October 27. Doc Tong, as he is fondly yet with awe called by his ENT staff, did so.
On October 27, Friday at 6 pm, my son came home.
My son was driving a motorcycle up Asin Road when the accident happened at about three in the afternoon of October 22, 2017. He said he miscalculated the accelerator's power as he took a turn along the road and found himself headed towards the ravine. Boppel decided to crash the motorcycle to a cement road barrier, he himself was thrown off from the motorcycle and had his face crushed on the barrier. He was rushed to the BGH-Emergency Room and was attended to by resident doctors. A facial CT-Scan was required. The only visible exposed wound was on his right upper lips that was covered with a big wad of gauze and cotton to minimize the bleeding when I saw him.
Upon seeing Boppel’s CT-SCAN, Doctor Untalan came to the hospital in fifteen minutes from home.
At half past seven in the evening, Doctor Untalan did an immediate procedure to close the open wound on Boppel’s lips that extended to his upper palate (so I was later told) at the trauma room of the ER. Then, Boppel had to be admitted to the hospital as Doc Tong decided to do a maxillofacial surgery the very next day as soon as the metal plates and screws would arrive from Manila. The Titanium Plates and Screws needed for the surgery arrived at 6 in the evening and my son was in the operating room at 9 that same night of October 23. The surgery finished at 3 am the next day, October 24. Doctor Untalan said he had increased the number of plates and screws now implanted on my son’s face as his cheek bones were "crushed like eggshells".
Doctor Totong constantly assured us that there was nothing to worry about and he will take charge of the whole proceedings. "Ako ang bahala." were his assuring words to me. His overwhelming confidence and assurance that everything will be alright was the one that brought us day to day as we stayed in the pay ward of the BGH-ENT Ward. And true to his words, Doctor Untalan had us home on the Friday after surgery, October 27.
Doctor Untalan gave Boppel a weekly (Monday afternoons) check-up in his clinic at Pueblo de Maria for the small procedures needed for six weeks, after which a monthly check-up was then required of my son. The second monthly check-up is now due.
Doctor Untalan gives the feeling as if my son is the only patient he has by the way he gives his full attention and care in every visit to his clinic.
I write this piece now if only to thank God for the gift of great expertise. He has given to Doctor Frederick Mars B. Untalan who in turn has given to many other patients who were in dire need of help. May God Almighty continue to prosper the works of Doc Tong.
