Dr Brinkmann has practiced medicine on three continents over the past 20 years, gaining a wealth of knowledge and an appreciation of what constitutes great medicine and excellent patient experience.
Dr Brinkmann’s training began at the University of Cape Town’s world famous Groote Schuur hospital (First in Obstetrics & Gynaecology) followed by Brown University and Harvard University in USA.
His specialist training in gynaecology and obstetrics took place in London at King’s College Hospital, affording him unique opportunities to work alongside some of the most respected professors in this field. As a consequence, he has wide experience in the management of all aspects of general gynaecology, including complex pelvic repair andlaparoscopic surgery.
In 2002, Dr Brinkmann became a research fellow in the translational oncology research centre of Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK) under the aegis of Professor Ian Jacobs at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. His research focused on a genetic and statistical approach for the diagnosis of dual-site cancers and was published in the respected Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He also participated in the renowned UKCTOCS research trial into ovarian cancer screening, the largest screening programme of its type in the world.
Dr Brinkmann continued his focus in women’s cancer and completed his sub-specialisation in gynaecological cancer (surgery) in Southampton and Portsmouth in 2005. He authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented at major conferences.
Now a Consultant at Queen Alexandra NHS Hospital Portsmouth he holds several key departmental positions reflecting his commitment to forming and shaping best practice in the hospital environment. These includeclinical lead in gynaecological oncology and colposcopy. He is also chairman of the multi-disciplinary team for gynaecological oncology where experts from an array of specialities discuss the optimum treatment plan for complex cancer patients.
Dr Brinkmann practices tailored private general and cancer gynaecology at two of the best facilities in the region: Spire Portsmouth Hospital and Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital. He treats women from late teensthrough to menopause and beyond. His expertise covers a wide range of conditions from prevention and screening, through common gynaecological symptoms to specialist and cancer treatments. Dr Brinkmann is an experienced minimal access (keyhole) surgeon with extensive experience of complex major surgery for gynaecological cancer.
Dr Brinkmann is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; a member of the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, the British & Irish Association of Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons
and the British Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. He is also deputy chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Portsmouth Hospital.
