Endovenous laser photocoagulation (EVLP) is a procedure, where laser energy is delivered into the internal wall of a varicose vein, resulting in its permanent closure throughout the treated length.
Local tumescence anaesthetizes the treated area, minimizing discomfort during procedure. The laser light energy is absorbed by water and changed into heat - temperature inside the vessel grows up to 60 -70 ° C (140- 158 F) - which causes the coagulation of blood and the destruction of the vessel wall. Temperature outside vein does not exceed 40 Celsius degrees(104 Fahrenheit), which eliminates possible side effects. The laser light is delivered to interior wall of the vessel by use of silicone fiber with usual thickness of 600 µm. Silicone fiber is inserted through a tiny entry point, usually behind the knee. The procedure eliminates necessity of general anesthesia - important factor for older or higher risk patients. The EVLP is recommended for patients with primary varicose veins and verified by USG Doppler - Color sapheno-femoral reflux .The big advantage of EVLP is the shortened length of the procedure and convalescence time as well as easy post procedure care. The procedure time averages between 60 and 100 minutes.
