Dr. Michell Andrés Cruz Martín is a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine with specialist expertise in Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine. He currently practices at the GUIDE Clinic within the Infectious Diseases Department at St. James’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, where he provides specialist care for people living with HIV and patients with complex infectious diseases.
Dr. Cruz completed specialist training in Internal Medicine through the Spanish national residency programme (MIR), obtaining the title of Specialist in Internal Medicine from the Spanish Ministry of Health. His training included extensive experience across several clinical disciplines including infectious diseases, HIV medicine, hepatology, respiratory infections, and the management of immunocompromised patients in tertiary teaching hospitals. He is registered on the Specialist Division in General Internal Medicine with the Irish Medical Council.
Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Cruz worked as a Consultant Physician in General Internal Medicine in several Irish hospitals, including Mayo University Hospital and Kerry University Hospital. During this time he gained extensive experience managing complex acute medical admissions, chronic multisystem disease, and infectious complications in hospitalised patients. At Kerry University Hospital he served as Sepsis Clinical Coordinator, contributing to hospital protocols aimed at improving early recognition and management of sepsis and enhancing patient safety.
Dr. Cruz also served as European Medical Lead for infectious disease and COVID-19 safety protocols at Activision Blizzard during the COVID-19 pandemic, designing infection prevention strategies and testing protocols for large international events across Europe in line with evolving public health guidance.
He has developed a strong subspecialty focus in HIV medicine and the prevention of HIV-associated malignancies. Certified in High-Resolution Anoscopy through the International Anal Neoplasia Society, he is currently leading the development of Ireland’s first High-Resolution Anoscopy screening service at St. James’s Hospital to improve early detection and prevention of anal cancer in high-risk populations.
Dr. Cruz is actively involved in research, medical education, and quality improvement initiatives. His work includes peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and award-winning research in HIV and sexually transmitted infections. His work evaluating adherence to clinical guidelines in HIV and STI care received the Best Poster Award at a national meeting of the Society for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Ireland.
He also contributes to teaching and supervision of junior doctors and trainees, delivering clinical education in HIV medicine, infectious diseases, and internal medicine.
Dr. Cruz holds a Professional Diploma in Leadership and Management with Distinction from University College Dublin and is a member of several international professional societies including the European AIDS Clinical Society, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV, and the International Anal Neoplasia Society.
Fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, with additional proficiency in French, he works in diverse clinical environments and contributes to multidisciplinary collaborations aimed at improving outcomes for patients with complex infectious diseases and HIV-related conditions.
