Bone Graft

If your jawbone isn't thick enough or is too soft, you may need bone grafting before you can have dental implant surgery. That's because the powerful chewing action of your mouth exerts great pressure on your bone, and if it can't support the implant, the surgery likely would fail. A bone graft can create a more solid base for the implant.

With bone grafting, a piece of bone is removed from another part of your jaw or your body — your hip, for example — and transplanted to your jawbone. It may take up to nine months for the transplanted bone to grow enough new bone to support a dental implant. In some cases, you may need only minor bone grafting, which can be done at the same time as the implant surgery using a substitute bone. The condition of your jawbone determines how you proceed.

Ceramic Braces - Keep Smiling Dental Practice

Ceramic braces are ideal for patients who want to look good during treatment but want an orthodontic option less expensive than Incognito. They are similar to metal braces, but the blocks are made of a tooth-coloured ceramic material, making the braces much less noticeable.

Child Braces

Children should have their first appointment with an orthodontist when they are 7 years old.  Early evaluation is necessary in order to prevent certain problems with jaw and tooth alignment. Not all patients are candidates for early treatment or interceptive orthodontics at this age. Most children will benefit from a single phase of comprehensive orthodontic treatment, later in life, when more permanent teeth have erupted.

Every patient is different and your child might or might not benefit from early treatment. Based on the growth of your child's jaws and other factors, the ideal time for braces might be earlier or later than another child.

For a safe approach to planning orthodontic treatment for your child, have an orthodontic evaluation by age 7 and then return to the orthodontic office, as recommended, for periodic growth checks until your child has reached the ideal time to start braces. This will save you valuable time in treatment and expense, while still providing excellent results.

Clear Braces

Clear Braces - Keep Smiling Dental Practice

Clear aligners are different from clear braces. Clear aligners are pieces of hard plastic that are designed to fit into your mouth like a mouthguard. Clear aligners are great for patients requiring minor orthodontic treatment. Because the retainers are clear, they are virtually invisible to others. You will not need to have wire braces on your teeth, so cleaning and eating are much easier if not just as normal.

This is an aesthetic solution for correcting minor anterior crowding, spacing, and minor relapse. The system corrects teeth incrementally through a series of clear aligner trays, each one generating up to 0.5 mm of movement. Trays are custom-fabricated and hand-articulated.

Incognito™ Braces

Lingual braces

Fitted to the inside of the teeth. For any adult or teenager keen to avoid any sign of braces this is the ultimate choice as the brace itself remains hidden. Our braces are bespoke (Incognito) and made of gold to ensure maximum comfort and precision. Incognito lingual braces use forces generated by brackets and wires to move the teeth into the desired position. Incognito braces are finer and lighter than traditional fixed braces and they are precision

engineered in Germany using the latest technology.  Incognito braces are totally customized to the surface of each individual tooth. This means they are as comfortable as possible because of their low profile.

Orthodontic Retainer

Retainers after Braces

A retainer keeps your teeth in place after your braces come off. It takes almost a year for the periodontal ligaments to solidify into their new positions after your braces are removed. That's why you need to wear your retainer exactly as your orthodontist directs. If you slack off or stop wearing it, your teeth could shift and get crooked again, or gaps could open up.

Dental Bridges

This is made by putting crowns on the teeth at either side of the space, and then joining these two crowns together by placing a false tooth in the space.

This is all made in the laboratory and then cemented into place with special adhesives. The bridge cannot be removed for cleaning.

Another option is an adhesive or "Maryland" bridge. This has wings that are bonded to the back of the supporting teeth with very little drilling involved.

Can I always have a bridge to replace missing teeth?

Bridges are only possible if you have enough strong teeth with good bone support. Your dentist will help you decide which is the best way of replacing missing teeth.

3-Unit Bridge

Implant Bridge

An implant-supported bridge is similar to a regular dental bridge, but it is supported by implants and not by natural teeth. In most cases, when an implant-supported bridge is used, one implant is placed in the jawbone for each missing

Maryland Bridge

The maryland bridge is an increasingly popular kind of bridge as very few adjustments need to be made to the surrounding teeth when placing the bridge. Maryland bridges are made up of a special resin which is cemented on to the enamel of your teeth and a metal framework. The structure of the bridge helps to improve its strength making Maryland bridges up to three times as strong as their conventional counterparts. An added benefit of the Maryland bridges light preparations are that there's no need to expose the inner part of the tooth known as the dentin. This helps to minimise the risk of you experiencing sensitivity in your teeth following the procedure. Also, as the nearby teeth won't need to be altered greatly, the process is normally completely reversible.

Dentists recommend that you have a check up every six months so that any early decay can be spotted before it gets the chance to cause a lot of damage. The examination also makes sure that your gums are nice and healthy as in later years most teeth are lost to gum disease. The dentist will carefully examine your tongue, floor of mouth and inside your cheek, looking for infections, ulcers, precancerous lesions and oral cancer. Crowns

Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, full cup over the portion of the tooth that lies at and above the gum line. Crowns can be made out of porcelain, porcelain & precious metal, or gold. They are used to; restore a tooth to its original state/ strenghten a tooth/ to improve the cosmetic apperance of a tooth.

PFM Crown

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns (PFM's).

PFM's can be thought of as a hybrid between the two other types of dental crowns, in the sense that they're made out of both metal and porcelain.

  1. A metal alloy

is used to create a thin thimble-like cap that fits over the tooth.
  2. Porcelain

is then fused to this metal substructure to form the overall shape of the crown and give it a white, natural-looking appearance.

Zirconia Crown

Zirconium also called Zirconia (Cercon) is rapidly becoming the material of choice for dental crowns. It is a very strong material able to withstand the wear and tear of every day use. Aesthetically, it is translucent very similar to a natural tooth, reflecting light in much the same way.

This means that Zirconium, Zirconia has a very aesthetic effect, which may be important if your new crowns are to be at the front of your mouth and is particularly relevant in cases where the crowns will be seen beside natural teeth.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants - Keep Smiling Dental PracticeDental Implants - Keep Smiling Dental Practice

A dental Implant is a replacement for the root or roots of a missing tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured into the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed.

Implants are made of titanium, which is strong, lightweight and biocompatible, this means that it is not rejected by the body. Titanium is the most widely used metal in both dental and other bone implants, such as orthopaedic joint replacements.

Implant surgery is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic. Once the Implant is inserted into the jaw it is left to heal/ integrate into the surrounding living bone. We can then use the implant to attach an artificial tooth/teeth such as a crown, bridges or dentures.

Implants are stable and permanent; they don't rely on neighbouring teeth for support. They are the ideal tooth replacement because they look and feel just like a natural tooth.

Dental X-Ray

Dental Radiographs are commonly called x-rays. Dentists use radiographs for many reasons: to find hidden dental structures, malignant or benign masses, bone loss, and cavities.

A radiographic image is formed by a controlled burst of X-ray radiation which penetrates oral structures at different levels, depending on varying anatomical densities, before striking the film or sensor. Teeth appear lighter because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film. , infections and other changes in the bone density, and the , appear darker because X-rays readily penetrate these less dense structures. Dental restorations (fillings, crowns) may appear lighter or darker, depending on the density of the material

Extractions

An extraction means to have a tooth removed, usually because of disease, trauma or crowding.

If you need an extraction, your dentist will first numb the area to lessen any discomfort. After the extraction, your dentist will advise you of what post extraction regimen to follow. In most cases a small amount of bleeding is normal. Your mouth will slowly fill in the bone where the tooth root was through the formation of a blood clot.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction

What are the main reasons for taking wisdom teeth out?

Far fewer wisdom teeth are now taken out than in the past.  If the tooth is not causing problems, your dentist will not want to remove it.  They will only remove wisdom teeth:

  • when it is clear that they will not be able to come through into a useful position because there is not enough room, and they are also causing some pain or discomfort
  • if they have only partly come through and are decayed - such teeth will often  as it will be difficult to clean them as thoroughly as your other teeth

Mouth Guard

Michigan Night Guards for Tooth grinding

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, can cause jaw and tooth pain, headaches, and wear and tear on the teeth. Mouth guards for teeth grinding are designed to be worn while sleeping at night to help prevent this from happening. The wearer may still try to make the movements, but the guard cushions the teeth and keeps them from touching. People who grind their teeth at night risk serious dental problems. Eventually, the teeth can start to wear down. As the enamel on the teeth wears away, there is less protection around the roots. Sensitive teeth, toothaches and cavities can result. One of the best ways to prevent these problems is by using specially designed mouth guards for teeth grinding.

Root Canals

What is root canal treatment?

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal.  The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection.

Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the  (known as the pulp) is infected through  or injury.  You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection.  In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour, which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died (or is dying).  This would need root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is a skilled and time-consuming procedure.  Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your dentist.

At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed, and any abscesses can be drained.  The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for the filling.  A temporary filling is put in and the tooth is left to settle.

The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening - Keep Smiling Dental Practice

Home teeth whitening systems allow you to whiten your teeth from the comfort of your own home. At-home professional teeth whitening is one of the most popular methods of achieving a brighter smile. Professional at-home teeth whitening requires custom-made trays, and professionally dispensed teeth whitening gel which you can only purchase through a licensed dentist. This method can whiten your teeth about 6-8 shades.

The whitening gel is placed in custom-fitted trays that fit perfectly over your teeth. As the peroxide in the gel breaks down, hydroxyradicals enter the tooth to naturally whiten the stains. Unlike strips, this process whitens all your teeth and provides maximum comfort with less sensitivity and gum irritation.

Veneers

What is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite' material is used instead of porcelain.

When would I need a veneer?

Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten the front teeth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when  are not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others.
