What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

Removable appliance - a plastic plate that can be taken out to be cleaned. It has delicate wires and springs attached, which move the teeth using gentle pressure. Fixed appliance - Often teeth need to be guided more accurately than they can be using a removable plate. Fixed appliances are brackets and bands temporarily stuck to the teeth. A flexible wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to be moved. Invisible Braces - We also offer state of the art ‘invisible braces. ’ These are tough, clear, plastic ‘positioners’ that are used to gradually straighten your teeth. Several sets of specially moulded positioners are made. Each set moves the teeth slightly from the previous position and is worn for about two weeks before being replaced with the next set. Each set is straighter than the last and the final set will be your desired result.

Traditional fixed appliances compose of a metal wire which is attached to metal brackets placed on teeth. The bracket and wire are connected together with an elastic attachment. They are used to straighten teeth. Clear brackets can be used which are made of ceramic or plastic making the appliance less noticeable. Metal wires are still used with a clear elastic attachment.
Orthodontic Retainer
Clear retainers are used after your fixed appliance treatment is complete. These are worn every night for a year and a few nights thereafter for as long as you want your teeth to remain in the same position following treatment. As your teeth will always want to return to their position before treatment was carried out (this movement is greatest in the first year following your orthodontic treatment) retainers should be worn every night for a year. Following this they should be worn for a few nights a week there after as your teeth will always want to return to their pre-treatment position and your teeth will move as you get older which is seen especially as overlap of the lower front teeth.
Mouth Guard
These should be worn during sports where there is a risk of damage to teeth. Mouth guards come in many different colours and materials. They can be worn over your fixed braces and adjusted as your teeth move to ensure they still fit.
