What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Projekt Usmiech - Dental Clinic in Poland

Projekt Usmiech

I am super happy with my new smileDL, UK, 17 02 21

I live in the UK but was born in Poland. In 2017 I decided to replace a tooth, that cracked and had to be removed, with an implant. I did lots of research, including local practices. I found that an implant would not qualify as an NHS treatment and privately it would have cost me approx £2,700 - £3,000. I decided to look more widely and found several places in Poland (seemed convenient as I speak polish, so thought communication would be easier, but I needn't have worried). Anyway, I chose Project Usmiech because I fancied a few days of sightseeing in Gdansk. The practice seemed modern, staff professional and friendly, the mix of the folk in the waiting room definitely international. Staff also spoke English/German and some other languages. The implant cost roughly 1/3rd of what my dentist in the UK would charge. I flew home on the day the implant was put in, and never had any issues with it (but it is important to keep good hygiene, incl interdental brushing). So, after this experience, the following summer, I returned to have some crowns replaced. I wanted a natural look (let's face it, no-one wants it to be known your teeth are not your own). I went for custom made crowns (higher price bracket but still the same price as cheap crowns in the UK), matching normal bone/tooth colour. They were hand-finished, I even had the shade adjusted exactly to my liking as I waited! I am super happy with my new smile. The dentist suggested some cosmetic improvements to the appearance, eg my teeth are quite square so he suggested how we might make them look subtly longer than wider by shaving off a bit if the gum. I was apprehensive, worrying about healing, the dentist explained the pros and cons, there was no pressure. I decided against it at first, then changed my mind (and I'm glad I did), the dentist happily accommodated my change of decision. The final thing I need to mention, both times I had a 360 scan of my jaw. One of them picked up that I had a root canal issue in an unrelated tooth. I asked for the pic of the scan to be emailed to me and I sent it to my NHS dentist, who was quite impressed that this was picked up, despite the treatment being carried out on entirely different tooth and the root canal being very faint on the image. They did their own local x-ray which confirmed it. I was under no pressure to do the root canal in Poland. I only did it back in the UK as this treatment was covered by NHS and as I had no pain, I thought it could wait a few months. I also am glad I picked Gdansk for sightseeing. Being Polish, I visited some museums that helped me to (re)learn Polish history (as a child growing up in a communist country full of propaganda (yes, misinformation and fake news exited then too), I did not understand really the Solidarity movement or knew much about the 2nd world war). And as a bonus, during my second visit in early June 2018, there was a heatwave so I ended up exploring the local seaside and beaches - fabulous. So, in summary, five stars for the dentist and five stars for Gdansk. Needless to say, highly recommended.
