The basic structure of a tooth comprises a crown visible in the mouth and a root, which is covered by your gum. Inside each tooth is the pulp, which consists of all the blood vessels and nerves that keep a tooth alive. This occupies a space in the centre of the tooth called the root canal.

Wisdom teeth are the large molars found at the very back of the jaw. They are the last teeth to appear (erupt) in the mouth, usually between the ages of 18 and 24 years, although this can vary. If the jaw is too small to accommodate them, they may cause pain or crowd other teeth out of position. Impaction means that the tooth may be partially trapped by the jawbone, back teeth or gums. Other reasons wisdom teeth are removed include misalignment which rubs up against the tongue or cheek causing pain and potential crowding of the remaining teeth.

Intravenous sedation involves injecting a medication through a vein which results in a altered state of consciousness. The patient becomes relaxed and will probably fall into a light sleep. During the procedure the patient is constantly monitored by the anesthetist. Medications such as pain control,antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents are also given intravenously. At the end of the procedure the sedation is reversed and patients leave the premise within 10 minutes!
