Dentistry Air Abrasion This technique is used as either a standalone treatment alternative to the traditional dental drill or to enhance the bond in adhesive dentistry. It either removed or minimises the requirement for anaesthesia and is a quiet procedure.
Bad Breath Treatment In most cases this problem is associated with bacterial deposits around the teeth / gum junction and / or the tongue. Individualised effective hygiene instruction together with the appropriate treatment will eliminate the problem in a short time period.
Bone Graft A healthy tooth sits in a supporting socket. When a tooth is lost this supporting bone is no longer required & so is taken away (resorbed) by the body. Bone grafting aims to reconstruct this missing bone by either natural or artificial means
CAD/CAM Dental Restorations Computer aided design(CAD) and computer aided manufacture of crowns bridges inlays appears to be the future of digital dentistry. While these processes are still relatively new they appear to offer enhances precision & fit for many dental restoration.
Cosmetic Dentist Consultation Most of dentistry is cosmetic. The front of the mouth is the most aesthetic as its how we see ourselves & the world sees us.Good cosmetics begins with being healthy. Once dental health has been achieved then we look at all the options and help you choose the most appropriate for you
Dental Bonding This is the addition of materials known as composites to tooth surfaces to alter the shape & contour of teeth. Typically is is used in the treatment of worn chipped teeth edges & to close spaces between teeth
Dental Bridges Bridges are used to replace missing teeth. The teeth are fixed in place either using crowns on the adjacent teeth or an adhesive bonded frame to support the replacement tooth/teeth
3-Unit Bridge Each tooth is described as a unit.If one tooth (unit) is missing then a tooth either side is required to support it - hence the 3 units.
Implant Bridge Implant bridges are retained by dental implants which are fixed directly to the jaw bone. Six implants can be used to replace 12 teeth in the lower jaw. Four implants can be used to replace 10 teeth in the lower jaw. One implant can be used to replace 2 teeth if there is an otherwise complete dentition
Maryland Bridge This is a type of adhesive or resin retained bridge. They are used either as an interim fixed tooth replacement prior to Dental Implant placement or as a definitive restoration. This type of treatment is very technique sensitive and a rubber dam moisture barrier is essential to make it work.
Permanent Bridge A definitive bridge can be made of a combination of different materials. The most common/durable definitive material is Porcelain Bonded to Gold Alloy. More recent material used are porcelain bonded to Titanium & porcelain bonded to Zirconium. The long term results with these new materials have yet to be assessed.
PFM Bridge PFM stands for Porcelain Fused to Metal. A number of years ago special gold alloys & porcelains were developed to allow porcelain to be bonded to gold alloy. The best/ most aesthetic bridges are built up by layering different porcelains in 3D to give the most lifelike affect.
Dental Checkup This is an oral health screen. Most dental problems dont give to symptoms until they are at an advanced stage. Because most dental problems are preventable early detection is an essential part of a preventive health strategy.
Dental Crowns Crowns are used to either alter the Colour Contour Position or Shape of teeth for either cosmetic or functional reasons. Crowns on back teeth are often required for structural reasons to prevent teeth cracking / splitting under load.
Gold Crown Gold crowns are used to protect back teeth. They are favoured because they are conservative of tooth structure(they can be cast in a thin section and still be strong) so minimal tooth structure is removed to create space for them.Gold alloys are available which are the same hardness as natural tooth structure, this prevents differential wear of the opposing natural teeth.
Permanent Crown There is no such thing as a permanent crown, because any material placed in the mouth has to cope with high loads which are constantly altering, extremes of temperature, variations in acidity / alkalinity + bacterial attack. No artificial material yet invented can tolerate this environment for a patients lifetime.
PFM Crown PFM stands for Porcelain Fused to Metal. A number of years ago special gold alloys & porcelains were developed to allow porcelain to be bonded to gold alloy. The best/ most aesthetic bridges are built up by layering different porcelains in 3D to give the most lifelike affect.
Porcelain Crown All porcelain crowns can be very aesthetic. Thanks to new developments in materials they have become much stronger. The still present the challenge of differential wear with opposing natural teeth.
Zirconia Crown Zirconia substructures have been used under porcelain crowns for a number of years now. The advent of all zirconia crowns is a very recent and promising development. How these new materials will do in the long term is not known.
Dental Implants Constructed from surgical grade Titanium or Titanium + Zirconium alloys. They are screw shaped artificial tooth root replacements. Bone fuses to the implant so it becomes a permanent fixture. Two implant systems started it all Straumann & Nobel Biocare & these are the ones we use
Immediate Implant Placement This is when a damaged tooth is removed & a dental implant is placed into the same tooth socket at the same visit. This reduces the number of visits and surgeries required. It can be a risky procedure in areas where aesthetics are a priority. It cant be carried if there is pre existing infection.
Restoration of Implants This is where the custom made artificial tooth (crown) is linked to the implant via a precision engineered join piece(abutment)or teeth. In our practice the same Dentist places & restores the implant.
Single Implant This is the most common procedure we carry out at the practice. A single tooth is replaced with a single implant retained crown. The great advantage of this is avoiding treatment on adjacent healthy teeth.
Dental Sealant A special resin bonded to the tooth biting surface to seal off any pits or fissures where bacteria may hide and damage the tooth. Once properly sealed this surface of the tooth is protected from tooth decay.
Dental X-Ray X-rays are used to examine the hard tissues (enamel /dentin/bone) in the mouth. The are used to detect early decay between teeth, problems at the root tip, teeth & bone fractures plus any other hard tissue pathology
Digital Dental X-Ray These use sensors instead of film. Have the advantage of lower dose, increased image size & clarity. The computer processes the image, so the image appears within a few seconds.
