What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges, also called tooth bridges, are placed when patients have one or more teeth missing or have gaps between their teeth. It usually takes two visits to get dental bridges fitted and the procedure takes about two hours.

What different types of dental bridges are there?

Traditional dental bridges consist of two crowns placed on healthy teeth on either side of the missing teeth, or gap, and the bridge then covers the gap supported by the two crowns. Cantilever bridges are placed when there are healthy teeth only on one side of the bridge. Maryland bridges are bonded to the backs of teeth on either side of the bridge and are not connected to crowns. Implant retained bridges are bridges that are placed over implants fixed in the gums. These bridges are placed when several implants are surgically inserted.

Is fitting dental bridges painful?

The dentist will numb the area where the dental bridge is to be placed before performing the procedure. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedure.

When can I travel by air after fitting dental bridges?

Patients should be able to fly two days after fitting their dental bridge. If they feel any pain or sensitivity after the procedure, they should consult their dentist for medications or postpone their journey till the pain or sensitivity has abated.

How long does recovery after fitting dental bridges take?

If patients feel pain or sensitivity after a dental bridge is fitted, they should recover within a week.

How do I care for my teeth after fitting dental bridges?

Patients should follow a normal dental hygiene routine. Patients should brush and floss their teeth and maintain proper hygiene. Patients should avoid eating or drinking anything that is too hot, cold or too hard, for at least a week after the procedure.

What are the alternatives to fitting dental bridges?

Some alternatives to dental bridges are partial dentures or removable dentures.

Dental Bridges
Dental crowns made in a dental laboratory are used to replace the natural crown of a damaged tooth. In case of a living tooth, the crown is prepared in order to fit the accordingly filled tooth. If the tooth is dead or extensively damaged, then the crown has to be built on the inlay that has been previously anchored (with a post or screw) to the dental root. Crowns can be made from metal as well as from materials that match the tooth colour. Gold alloys are considered to be the most ‘tooth-friendly prosthetic materials due to their suitable speed of wearing, easy processing and chemical stability. Nowadays, modern ceramic materials (porcelain) are becoming increasingly popular, their best characteristic being aesthetic appeal that is comparable to dental enamel. Excessive fragility is no longer a problem when using modern fixing methods. The combination of the two previously mentioned materials (metalloceramics) is probably the most widely used method at the moment. Here the aesthetic ceramic layer is fused to cast precious metal. The result of this is a precisely fitting aesthetic and durable crown.
Dentist Consultation
Dentistry - dental treatment with different fillings (amalgam, composite and glass ionomer fillings) as well as root canal therapy. The most durable fillings are made from cast gold or ceramic materials (porcelain) and are produced in a dental laboratory. Gold is the longest known and used durable material for dental fillings. Gold alloy restoration does not dissolve in saliva, nor does it break. When properly made, such filling may last a lifetime provided that oral health is being taken care of (oral hygiene!). Gold used in fillings has the same durability as the tooth itself; therefore, it does not cause any malocclusion. It is best used in fillings for molar teeth that are subject to the highest chewing pressure. The colour of gold may seem unnatural, but usually the filling will not remain visible. On the other hand, a golden tooth may also be aesthetically appealing. Allergic reactions to gold are very rare. To place a cast gold or ceramic restoration, the old filling and the dental tissue softened by caries is drilled out. The resulting cavity is then shaped to accept the final restoration, and an impression is made. This impression is used by a dental technician at the laboratory to prepare a filling that exactly matches the dental cavity and thereafter it is secured in place by the dentist. Fillings made from ceramic materials match the exact colour of the tooth and therefore is suitable for use in the visible area of the teeth.
Dental Implants
The dental implant is the safest, most aesthetic and natural way to replace teeth. The base of a dental implant (a special screw) is surgically placed into the jawbone in order to replace the missing dental roots. After the screw has become integrated in the bone, a metalloceramic crown or ‘artificial tooth is made. Such crown enables the jawbone to be spared that may not be possible with other types of prostheses where only the visible part of the tooth is restored. It is also possible to use an implant-supported bridge with several artificial crowns. An artificial root is cast from pure non-allergic titanium that is secured into the bone. Surgery is done in local anesthesia and may last for a couple of hours. An oral surgeon will use special drills to secure the implant into the jawbone. 3-6 months later when the titanium screws have integrated into the bone, the dentist will secure the prosthesis (made by a dental technician) into the oral cavity. In the meantime, the patient will wear a temporary prosthesis. What are the prerequisites for treatment? First, there should be enough bone in the jaw. One prerequisite of successful treatment is ideal oral hygiene. The patient should be ready to have regular check-ups every 3-9 months. Implant therapy is not age-limited. Thorough investigation such as X-ray imaging and cast model analysis is required before the initiation of treatment.
