Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns (sometimes referred to as Dental Caps) are single unit covers that are placed over heavily broken down, filled or root treated teeth. They look and feel just like real teeth. A crown literally wraps around the tooth just like a hat wraps around a head, thus strengthening the underlying tooth structure by holding it all togethe

Dental Implants

Inserting dental implants is a relatively minor oral surgical procedure. It is usually done in the dental surgery, under local anaesthetic. Post-operative discomfort is usually minimal and normal activities can generally be resumed after 24 – 48 hours. After the dental implants are inserted into the jaw, a certain amount of time is left to allow the implant to integrate with or “bond” to the bone. This process is known as osseointegration. After the prescribed healing time, a tooth or teeth are either screwed or cemented to the implant. The prosthetic teeth are usually fixed to the dental implants and cannot be removed. The false teeth are looked upon as being a permanent restoration. The teeth supported by the dental implants look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants require post-operative care. However, this is usually carried out during your normal dental check up.

Sedation for dental treatments

The IV sedation is administered by a medical physician who comes to our practice for the dental appointment. His role is to administer the sedation and to monitor the patient while the dentist does the treatment. This means 2 independent providers will be treating the patient. At the duration of the appointment, patients have very little memory or recollection of the dental procedure. Patients are usually ready to go home after a short recovery period.

Teeth Whitening

The active ingredient used in teeth whitening is Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2). The oxygen element penetrates the teeth and oxidises the stains and pigments within their structure. The basic chemical action involves the long chain colour molecules to break down into shorter chains therefore changing the optical appearance of the molecules, which in turn makes the teeth appear lighter in colour. The shade of the teeth is improved, without altering the structure.

Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

The porcelain veneers not only improve the physical look of the teeth, but can also improve the strength of the teeth. The ceramic used is bonded to the underlying tooth structure. The bonding is literally super-gluing the ceramic to the tooth and the glue forms a medium between tooth and ceramic which adds strength both to the teeth but also to the porcelain veneer. In preparation, a very thin amount of tooth structure is removed. Impressions are then taken, which are sent to a professional lab technician to make the porcelain veneer. At the second appointment, the veneer is tried in and, if perfect in shade and fit, it is bonded to the tooth surface.

Dr Adam Alford

Job Title:
  Dentist
Biography:

In 2000 I graduated from the University of Sydney with Honours.  I have worked extensively in Country, General Family, Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Implants practices, in both Australia and the United Kingdom.

I have strong beliefs in offering patients options with supporting information on the positives and negatives of these options.  This enables you, as the patient, to make an educated decision and to decide the treatment that best suits your particular circumstance.

I started my career in North Richmond, on the outskirts of Sydney.  Here, I developed the skills to organise and plan treatments across the many dental mediums involved in large reconstructive cases.  I also worked closely with the principal dentist and maxillofacial surgeon, to improve and enhance my oral surgery skills.

My next location was on the lower north shore, at Wahroonga.  During this time I concentrated on high quality restorative and preventative treatment, with an emphasis on offering treatment options for long term success.  Here, I started to research Snoring and Sleep Apnoea issues, and Fluoride supplementation guidelines for prevention.  I also started to research new, more aesthetic materials which still offer the same long term success as the older style materials.  For example, using ceramic crowns instead of the older metal fused to ceramic crowns, and ceramic restorations instead of the tooth coloured plastic materials.

During 2004 I moved to London to follow my wife’s career.  Here, I joined a Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Implants based practice in Richmond, London.  I soon enhanced my knowledge in these areas.  I spent time with the principal dentist, specialising in the placement of Dental Implants and reconstructive cases with implants, and learning the often neglected skill of planning.  Whilst in London I researched and compiled a study on Teeth Whitening for an Australian dental.
