I’m frequently asked the question “What is the difference between an Osteopath and a Chiropractor?”.I some times wonder “What is the difference between two Osteopaths?”.Both Osteopathy and Chiropractic came into being in the USA in the 1880's.Both Chiropractic and Osteopathy use Spinal Manipulation.Both Professions have developed more subtle forms of treatment such as Applied Kinesiology (Chiro.), Cranio-Sacral Osteopathy and Visceral Manipulation (Osteo.).Currently, in the USA, Osteopaths are considered the same as Medical Doctors. They are very different to British Osteopaths, who still work in the traditional way, i.e. Hands on.Chiropractors in the USA work the same way as they do in the UK.Osteopaths train at one of 3 full time schools in and around London, doing a 4 year degree.Chiropractors train at the Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, doing a 5 year Degree.Both professions have overseas graduates working in the UK.Differences between these two Professions can be difficult to identify.I know members of both professions who see patients very frequently, having them pay large sums of money up front.I also know Chiropractors and Osteopaths who are very genuine, honest and caring people. Very knowledgeable and skilled in their professions.Interestingly, as I attend Courses, I find it pleasing to find I’m sharing my time with Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, Osteopaths and many other people in my line of work.Personally, if I were in Pain, and needed treatment, I would look for the best recommendation by “Word of Mouth” and not be too concerned whether they were a Chiropractor or an Osteopath.

Treatments are tailored for the Patient. It is understood that some people simply do not like osteopathic manipulation, while others like Deep Tissue Massage, or benefit from Cranio-Sacral Therapy.

The neck frequently causes pain. The neck supports the head, which weighs about 10 lbs. The head turns, nods back & forth and bends side to side. The muscles in the neck perform all these fine movements, and also holds the head in all sorts positions.When a vertebra in the neck is moved slightly out of position, small ligaments are over stretched and the muscles in the area then spasm to protect the neck.This is where osteopathic manipulation can put the vertebra into the correct position, and stop this painful muscle spasm.

After the examination, a description of the course of treatment is given. If you want, and we have no objections, the first treatment usually happens straight after the examination. We are trained to use a variety of techniques, that can be tailored for each patient. from muscular giants through to 6 week old babies.

This is a lot more thorough, and more formal than the consultation. A full case history, and examination is done, and an 'official' explanation of what is happening is given. if you have had any X-rays or scans, can you bring any reports with you.

At a Consultation you will be welcomed and asked to fill out a brief questionnaire relating to your general health and contact details. After watching a short video you will have a better understanding about chiropractic and how your nerves, spine and joints work and can cause pain. You will be given a tour of the clinic and introduced to your chiropractor. Your chiropractor will consult with you in confidence, asking detailed questions relating to your present complaint, past history and lifestyle. You will have the time to provide him with all relevant information. Your area of complaint, entire spine and posture will be examined thoroughly using neurological, orthopaedic and physical tests. The chiropractor uses specialised palpatory techniques which will note changes in your muscle tone and joint movement patterns. These motion tests are also carried out before each treatment to evaluate your progress. If necessary you will be x-rayed or referred for MRI. Your appointment will be made at this time, usually within a few days. Chiropractic is a profession that specialises in the diagnoses, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculo- skeletal system and its effects upon the spinal nerves. It takes five years in full time education to become a chiropractor. Chiropractors use their hands to adjust your spine and limbs where signs of restriction in movement occur, improving mobility, easing pain and inflammation and relieving any pressure on spinal nerves. This treatment or adjustment therefore allows the joints to return to normal mobility then the body uses its own healing processes, which we recognise in ability to heal cuts, bruises, broken bones and fight infections. We aim to relieve your pain in a fast and effective manner. 

The initial consultation includes a full assessment and treatment. This is an hour long appointment. Each subsequent treatment session lasts approximately 15 minutes, and the total number of treatments will depend on the nature of your complaint. You should find that you are noticing considerable improvement within 6 to 8 treatments.
