Biography:
MBBS, MD, FRACS . General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in General Surgery with a well established record of accomplishment in basic and clinical research, including a doctoral degree (MD) which was awarded by the University of Adelaide in May 1996 for his 3 years of full time study culminating in acceptance of his thesis “The Development, Validation and Analysis of New Endosurgical Procedures in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery”. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Surgery having graduated from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1987 with the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and was awarded the Ruth Heighway Prize for Obstetrics in 1985. He undertook his Internship and Basic Surgical Training at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia. Thereafter he entered the Advanced Surgical Training program of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, training at all major teaching hospitals in South Australia. In 1998 he was appointed chief resident in surgery, Lyell McEwin Health Service, South Australia, and Visiting General Surgeon, Pt. Augusta Hospital & Pt. Pirie Regional Health Service, South Australia. During 1999, he moved from Adelaide to undertake 12 months of sub-specialty post-fellowship training in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Princess Alexandra and Mater Private Hospitals in Brisbane. During the year 2000, he worked as a specialist in Hepato-Biliary Pancreatic Surgery within the quaternary referral unit of the Leicester General Hospital U.K. In 2001, he returned to Adelaide to take up a position as a Consultant in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the Lyell McEwin Health Service and Flinders Medical Centre, with admitting rights to a number of Adelaide’s prominent private hospitals.

MBBS, Bariatric Physician and General Practitioner. Previously a highly regarded and much loved General Practitioner at Flagstaff Hill for 25 years, Helen has dedicated her time to working at Adelaide Obesity Surgery since 2005. She values and enjoys the tremendous positive impact that weight loss surgery has on the health and well-being of people with significant weight problems. Her role is to provide long term care and support to help people achieve their goals of permanent weight loss and improved health. Specifically, Helen will meet you at your initial appointment at AOS. She will learn about you and your health concerns and explain what the surgery and long term management is all about. Helen will also assist Dr Bessell at your surgery. After your recovery you will see Helen regularly for support and guidance (as well as band adjustments if you have had a LapBand). An important part of her role is to help you to understand how your surgery will aid in your weight loss and she will assist you to learn to live happily and comfortably with your surgery, whether lap band or gastric bypass. Trouble shooting any problems that occur along the way, & encouraging you with helpful and realistic strategies are a regular part of her sessions with you. Success after weight loss surgery is much more likely when you come back regularly and embrace the program provided by Helen and the other members of the team at AOS. She is always pleased to see you whether you are going well, or if you have been struggling and feel you that are off track.

She is a Accredited Practising Dietitian. She has been an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Accredited Nutritionist for 10 years. She has been part of the AOS team since 2005 and has not only the theory to share with you, but the practical tips she has learned from the hundreds of people she has worked with who have been through weight loss surgey. Her goal is not to lecture you on healthy eating, but help you get the most from your surgery. When you meet her prior to surgery she will provide advice on the dietary changes to help you to prepare for and recover from your surgery. She has lots of practical ideas to help make these stages easier. Following surgery She will help you transition safely back to a normal diet. As part of the ongoing support program, she has lots of practical tips to help you get the most from your surgery and maximise your health. Whether it is menu planning, recipe modification, label reading, eating out, managing hunger, family friendly eating, getting the right balance or dietary management of medical conditions, she can help. is a published author and a keen user of social media to provide a credible source of nutrition information and support for those undergoing bariatric surgery.
