About Port Lapsurgery

Dr George Petrou is a Senior Visiting Medical Officer with Mid North Coast Local Health District since 2008. His expertise includes laparoscopic abdominal wall hernia repair, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, bariatric surgery, liver resection surgery, gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Dr Petrou was awarded MBBS, BSc(med) from the University of NSW in 1996. He then spent his early years in residency training.

Dr Petrou completed Advanced General Surgical Training through South West Sydney Area Health and was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College Of Surgeons in 2005. During his training he excelled in trauma, care of the critically ill and advanced laparoscopic surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, abdominal wall and biliary tree. The Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Society of Australia recognizes his training in both gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

During fellowship training Dr Petrou developed an interest in liver resection surgery for the treatment of colorectal cancer, liver metastases and primary liver cancer. He pursued post fellowship specialized training in this area. In 2005, he worked as the hepatobiliary fellow at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Dr Petrou continues to perform liver resection surgery at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital. He is currently the only regional liver surgeon performing high volume liver surgery in Australia. He is hoping to formally publish the results and outcomes of his patients in the near future.

Dr Petrou started his private practice known as PORT LAPSURGERY in February 2008, specialising in laparoscopic hernia repair, laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and bile duct exploration. Dr Petrou specialises in Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass Surgery and performs these surgeries in high volume at the Port Macquarie Private Hospital.

My doctor was so approachable and friendly, what a great experience

5 50 Gastric Sleeve

I chose Port Lap Surgery for my gastric sleeve because they were highly recommended. They charged me the price on their website and I feel it was good value.

The clinic itself looked good and clean, while the people I met there were pleasant, and really helpful. After the procedure, the clinic called me to follow-up regarding the healing process. I’ve been back for an actual check-up and they call me every few months to monitor the progress. The two ladies at the reception desk were especially helpful. My doctor was so approachable and friendly, too! What a great experience.

This is absolutely life changing

5 50 Gastric Bypass

This is absolutely life changing. The best thing I've done. It takes some getting used to. But once you get into a routine. It's amazing

I chose this clinic randomly. But oh so glad I did. I know others who have been else where and didn't get looked after as well as I did. Say know more!! The staff are amazing. George and Louise couldn't be nicer more informative and kinder. Louise goes beyond her duty of care. They are kind understanding people. Couldn't recommend this clinic enough. AWESOME.
