About Root & Branch Acupuncture

Whatever your problem and state of health, Root and Branch Acupuncture aims to help you be the best the you can.  During your consultation I take as much time as necessary to truly understand your problem and how it may have arisen, and also to advise you about how to hold onto the results that you get from treatment with lifestyle and dietary changes.  When necessary, I work closely with the local health food store to identify supplements that will help to support your health. And although my view is that we should generally try to treat our health problems with alternative medicine before using drugs, I will always refer patients back to their GPs for conditions that I consider need the diagnostic tests - and treatments - that western medicine offers.

Over many years I have built up breadth and depth of clinical experience and undertaken hundreds of hours of training both in Ireland and in China.  My weekly diary features a wide range of common and not so common conditions but the main areas of my work can be classified as: women's health/couple infertility, all kinds of pain, insomnia, stress/anxiety and depression, and gastro-intestinal problems including auto-immune conditions such as colitis and crohns.

Sinusitis was one of my problems.

I was delighted with my experience with Mairi. I was made to feel relaxed and comfortable even with my fear of needles. I have not had any trouble since I had treatment. Thank you, Mairi.

Mairi Caughey - Practice Therapist at Root & Branch Acupuncture

Mairi Caughey

Job Title:
  Practice Therapist

My background is a degree in science (Zoology) with a diploma in social science (Town & Country Planning) and, as you might expect from someone whose family are all mainstream medical professionals (doctor, physiotherapist and dietician) I believe that the ideal healthcare service is an integrated approach combining the best of eastern and western medicine.

I graduated in 2008 with a Diploma in Acupuncture from the Acupuncture Foundation Ireland, and a Licentiate from Nanjing, China.

As with any profession, learning is never meant to stop and I continue to attend courses, seminars and workshops to expand my knowledge and refine my skills. In addition to courses in Ireland, the UK and Europe, I spent a month in Beijing in 2013 observing in the private clinic of Dr Wang Ju-Yi, one of Beijing’s ‘Famous Doctors’.  This period of observation allowed me to acquire new insights into the treatment of especially chronic and complex conditions such as diverse as bowel cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism and interstitial cystitis.

If you are interested in reading some short accounts of my observations while in Beijing, please have a look at the page ‘Experiences in Beijing’.

  • Diploma in Acupuncture, Acupuncture Foundation Ireland (AFI), 2008, The AFI’s educational standards are consistent with Europe’s ‘Best Practice’ standards on learning, in terms of total hours and course duration.
  • Licentiate from Nanjing, China, 2008. Graduates of the AFI undertake 1 month of practical experience in Chinese hospitals under the supervision of experienced Doctors of Chinese Medicine.  Completion of this experience results in the award of a Licentiate.
  • BSc in Zoology, 1984, Aberdeen University.
  • Diploma in Town & Country Planning, 1989, Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh.
